hello.
I am a new kde migrant from gnome and had a fresh install of kubuntu 9.04 amd64, running straight into following problems : 1.The network manager applet, shows "fatal error signal 12.." when configured for first run.from then on the, tabs for dsl, wireless are permanently grayed out and disabled. only ethernet and vpn are enabled. (even as super user).so dsl can't be configured from gui. system log shows network-manager detects eth0, and does everything. normal. only gui is buggy. no solution so far, I've been using custom scripts to pon/poff pppd. which are neither secure, nor reliable. 2.I disabled khotkeys, replaced kwin with compiz-emerald, and let compiz handle some shortcuts (the commands plugin), compiz successfully overrides kde shortcuts, except one : the mouse wheel on desktop area do "switch desktops", it was fine but after reboot it does "show desktop", and in other session it does something else, and sometimes doesn't works. later I figured out that compiz has its own 2 desktops, kde has another 2, ??? (yes, I do use compiz-settings manager due to serious lack of options in Kontrol center.) 3.In "add plasma widgets from local file" , the open file dialog shows only directories, no files are shown (*.plasmoid , *.zip etc) making it impossible to select a file. also, "add superkaramba widgets" looses all installed widgets after reboot. 4.The "select greeter font size" in login manager has no effect, the login fonts are always too big. 5.when in su mode, cannot launch any app from terminal, konqueror can't connect to x-server, dolphin gives another error. miscellaneous: 6. x/compiz kicks in middle of kde splash, ruining the very purpose of it, and is first to exit leaving shutdown screen horribly scrambled. every thing else is hopefully fine. system : kde 4 + plasma on kbuntu 9.04 amd64. compiz set as default window manager. firewall set to allow local x-server protocols. desktop effects enabled. ati radeon. If I had posted this in/as wrong place/topic/section moderators, please move this thread.

1 - My guess is the entire KDE community is on wicd
4 - see below, do a kdesu systemsettings 5 - type "kdesu name_of_app" and you will have root rights I don't know anything about compiz, sorry mate. HTH

sort of a cop out answer but these might be kubuntu specific and therefore better asked at the *buntu forums also you might consider changing the topic here to include "kubuntu" as there are some kubuntu dev's on the forum

Title changed to include Kubuntu.
6 - Likely because Compiz does not know it needs to wait, but tries to take control immediately, causing the login splash to stop before the KDE startup procedure has completed. Problem is in Compiz not KDE. 2 - KHotKeys is required for KDE custom shortcuts such as Print Screen, and is not involved in Global Shortcuts. I would recommend setting up D-Bus actions in it to control Compiz, and disable Compiz's own shortcut handling so KDE applications are aware of Compiz's shortcuts. 1 + 3 - Seem like Kubuntu specific issues, probably related to Plasma crashing on logout or something.

thanks for response.
I'm using wicd now, kwin is default again, and compiz replaces it after login, from autostart, that solves a lot of problems. the session is saved correctly and no more crashes. just a little question : does the KDM's greeter themes also changes login fonts ? |
