Currently, I have KWin compositing enabled, but rarely use it (screenshots are the exception) because it slows everything down. When KDE starts up, it loads KWin into compositing mode, and I always have to turn it off with ++F12.
Is there a way that I can still have compositing enabled, but not activated at startup? That way, I can activate compositing when I want to, but without the hassle of going back into systemsettings.

Thanks, that certainly seems functional, but I would much rather keep my taskbar and desktop free from any more plasmoids. A keyboard shortcut would be perfect.

You could associate that plasmoid to a keyboard shortcut.
Or alternatively have a script make a config file change & dbus call to kwin ( this is what the plasmoid does ) run on logon
