Is anyone having similar problems to this with KDE 4.3? If so, were you able to solve it? These graphical glitches with effects on is really starting to tick me off and I'd rather have them on, than not. Distro is OpenSUSE 11.2, kernel 2.6.31.5 Any help that anyone would be able to give would be greatly appreciated. |

If you are using Desktop Effects, try disabling them.

No, I want to get this fixed, not simply turn desktop effects off. That would be like shooting someone just because they're ill.
Is this an upstream issue with Xorg or the ATI drivers? |

I think what bcooksley meant was to turn them off temporarily to see if the problem is present then as well. From your description, I must admit I'm not sure if it's a problem with effects off. Assuming the problem is gone with effects turned off, have you tried with compiz instead? No, I'm not suggesting you switch to compiz permanently but if the artefacts only show up using kwin it's likely a bug in kwin. If they show up in compiz too, it could be a driver issue.

Nah theres nothing wrong with the effects turned off.
Tried it with compiz, works fine, but it tells me that xgl can't be found and spits out the following warning. WARNING: Application calling GLX 1.3 function "glXDestroyPixmap" when GLX 1.3 is not supported! This is an application bug! WARNING: Application calling GLX 1.3 function "glXCreatePixmap" when GLX 1.3 is not supported! This is an application bug! WARNING: Application calling GLX 1.3 function "glXQueryDrawable" when GLX 1.3 is not supported! This is an application bug! So I'm guessing that its either a driver issue, or both a driver/config issue with the ATI drivers AND Kwin.. Because even though I got those warnings, I have absolutely no glitches, but the transparency does not work with Compiz, but that isn't such a big deal. |

Hm...I'm getting errors like that with kwin but everything works anyway (what I use at any rate). It's not entirely comparable since I use intel-graphics but it seems to indicate that the error is not necessarily a problem. What effects do you use? Maybe it's a specific one that's causing the trouble.

Well I rebooted last night and all the effects work with compiz flawlessly, so it might be something with KWin.
If there is anything I can do to provide people with more information on how to fix such issues then please let me know as I'll always be available to help sort this out. |

I would suggest filing a bug at bugs.kde.org, if there isn't one filed already. It can sometimes be hard finding a duplicate there, unfortunately, but otherwise: probably your best bet.

I have the same problem with an X700 using the radeon driver (I am not able to install the fglrx driver from ATI repository) and I solved it in the following way without installing compiz: in the desktop effect, tab Advanced, I use XRender as compositing type instead of OpenGL and now glitches are gome.

Sounds like an OpenGL graphics driver glitch.
And those warnings that say there is an "application bug"... That's a complete lie. It's not an application bug at all--it's a non-standard-compliant driver that is advertising support for functions that is DOES support but is spitting out error messages anyway if they are used by an application. Both the KWin and Compiz teams have argued with with the Mesa team but they still think it's our fault... We use the functions because the driver supports them! >_< |

Aah righto. Well that seems a bit daft. Don't they check the individual cards capabilities and then based on that, advertised what is supported? Surely that would make things easier. The X1400 is a few years old, so I'm not all that terribly bothered with it. Just using Compiz on it and its suitable for what I need on this laptop, just basic composition and smooth video rendering.
