Hi all!.
I have an annoying bug (but it is not important one) when i use the kwin on Kubuntu Karmic Koala. I don't know how to describe with works and my English speech is very weak, so i will take my time to do it... Well, i have a Intel Core2Duo T7100 and a Nvidia GF 8400M GS graphic card on my laptop and i have a good FPS marks(i think so...) when i use the desktop effects (kwin), "Glxgears" show me among "10.000 - 8.000 frames per 5 seconds" but, some actions on kde are showings lag and the smooth is not present, for example: - Using Alt+TAB (Jumping among active windows "cover flow"), the moves are not smooth and present a lag effects. - Minimize and maximize active windows, fast but with lag present, so annoying. - Click on "show desktop", the same lag like the previous (minimize). The most funny thing it is that that lag vanish when i force the machine, i mean, if i press several times Alt+Tab (well, 15 or 20 times in 5 seconds for example), the effects is smooth and no lag or if i minimize and maximize constantly the active windows, there are no lag. The Kwin look nice although if i let rest the system, and press again alt+tab the lag come back again... Obviously, this is easier to explain with images or a video but i hope describe it correctly. Furthermore, i give you my kwin advanced configuration: - OpenGL - Always - Texture From Pixmap - Trilineal - (activate) enabled direct rendering - (activate) use vsync Nvidia driver (canonical) 185.13. CPU profile: Performance -> CPU frequency: Performance. Thanks. |

Try to use the nvidia driver of nvidia.com. Download and install manual in your pc and try again run effects. The pre-compiled nvidia driver of canonical is no very good.
I always install the manual driver and it work much better...

Done, but the problem still presents.

Can you please confirm that your system isn't experiencing swapping? ( You will see disk activity and general lag when accessing apps you haven't for a while )

If you mean, if there are some swap activity under Kubuntu, i think not.
Well, i'm looking the system monitor and the activity is (with and without the lag): - RAM: No changes when there are lag and when i force the system (i mean when the lag vanish): show me 0,48 gb (constanly) - SWAP: No changes too: show me 0 kbs (constanly) i set vm.swappiness=10 in /etc/sysctl.conf. i hope that you meand that |

Try removing /var/tmp/kdecache-*/kpc/ and /var/tmp/kdecache-*/plasma* outside KDE

Done, but any success ...
If i could show what i want to describe with a image or video, it would be easier to know what is the lag is normal or a bug what it is possible to fix. But i don't know how to record a clip to show it and what program to do it. Maybe this image could be useful. I don't think that my laptop has a bad features, do it? |

Try to use Bilinear... Trilineal give some lag in system...

You could move the nvidia-settingsrc file and see if that helps. (If you don't care about it, you can just rm ~/.nvidia-settingsrc, of course.) You may have set some odd settings in the nvidia-settings tool and maybe that's what's causing the problems.
Second, someone please feel free correct me if I'm wrong: while glxgears is not a good benchmark, your performance seems abnormally low. On my (really old) laptop, with a Pentium M (2GHz) chip and a 6800 nvidia card, I used to get upwards of 2400 frames per second using the nvidia binary drivers. Now, I use the nouveau driver and still get 240 frames/second, without effects, or 160, with desktop effects (using xrender - opengl doesn't work yet). Do you think that the video card is dying/dead?

As far as I know this is because your card is put into lower power consumption mode when it is not used thus it has less efficiency. when you switch alt-tab or perform other gpu-intesive actions GPU is switched to max power and max efficiency, so your effects start to run smoothly.
you can verify this in nvidia-settings - PowerMizer section. |

thanks to reply.
well i decided to install the new drivers of Nvidia (195) and change all options to optimize (cpu & Gpu in the powermizer section). Some has improved, Get less lag and look very nice and smoothly but now the problem is the temperature of the Gpu about 60º-70º even 80º. well the graphic card is a GF 8400M GS is not a great one but its enough for my uses. |

Try removing the VSync from the KWin advanced settings. I read somewhere that it doesn't play nice with nVidia driver vertical sync. It did have a positive effect on my laptop (with Quadro FX 3600M + nvidia.ko). Further, when checking FPS you can check the KWin FPS plugin, too.
Good luck! |
