Alt+Tab effects not working anymore

Thu Feb 11, 2010 2:27 pm
Hi !

I have just updated to Kde 4.4. And the alt+tab effects don't work anymore, any of them. I have a plain old windows with list of running applications. moreover if I type on the filter of the systemsettings module related to screen effects, systemsettings gets stuck after one letter typed.

Oh and UserManagement in systemsettings doesn't work neither. no userconfig.py module available...

Can you please ensure your packages are fully up to date?

As I am having trouble with plasma-desktop (black screen) I am waiting to solve this problem and will check after.

EDIT : I have the solved my previous problem. But still had to install knetworkmanager because it hasn't been done with the update. So I am certainly missing other packages. But which one is involved in this feature ?

Thanks

Anything involving KWin.

Also, run "kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental" and logout and back in again.

I have installed all kwin related packages and then tried your command.

Unfortunately nothing changed... :((

Maybe a stupid question, or two rather:

Does the rest of the effects work?
Are you sure KDE is configured to use kwin as the window manager and not compiz? You can check in system-settings->Personal->Default applications.

Hi.
I have the same problem in 4.4 - no matter what type of switching I choose (box/cover/flip) the same basic type of switching is used (box with running apps from current desktop - see screenshot). While I was taking that snapshot I had flip switch turned on, the rest was turned off.

I reinstalled kwin but it did not help and I am sure kwin is my WM :)
All the other effects are working fine.

kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental did not help either.
Is there anything else I can try?

Where do you setup the switch effect? Note that it's been moved to System Settings -> Window Behavior -> Navigate Through Windows in KDE SC 4.4.

I take that back :)
All works fine, I just didn`t notice that despite having flip switch effect enabled, one must also have "Desktop effects -> General Effect for window switching" set up properly (I had "no effect").

Must be because I used to use compiz before 4.4 upgrade.

Also thanks for your hint Hans, that would help as well.

That's where you used to configure it before KDE SC 4.4. Seems like there are two places where you can change this option in 4.4. :)

Had the same problem here, but fixed by selecting the swtich effect through System Settings->Windows Behaviour.
So, what do the settings currently under System Settings -> Desktop Effects -> All Effects -> Windows Management do?

Thanks

leandroaveiro: I don't understand your question. They do pretty much what their descriptions say.
Box switch, Cover switch and Flip switch are effects for window switching (Alt+Tab or anything other).
Desktop cube is for desktop switching.
If you have any of these effects disabled and go to either Workspace behavior → Virtual desktops → Switching or Window behavior → Task switcher and enable any of previously disabled effects, they will be automatically enabled for you. So basically there is no point in enabling them in Desktop effects module, as this may be done somewhere else (where is not stripped of context).
If you are fine with your setting, you may disable unneeded desktop effects. This should reduce KWin memory usage for around few kilobytes and startup time for some miliseconds (loading desktop effects takes resource and time, but won't be noticeable without professional benchmarking utility).
Other effects (Desktop grid, Outline, Present windows, Resize window) are effects on their own. You can't configure them elsewhere in System settings. Most of these has configuration dialog (little wrench icon) where you can assign keyboard shortcut for them. Open some windows, press keyboard sequence and see what is being done.

Best regards
