Greetings !!

I tried to update the kde x environnement but it failed for any reasons and now my windows manager is completly f*****d up...

I tried with rm -Rf .kde4 but this is the same behaviour... for example when I get on my desktop and launch konsole... it appears with no system bar (no menus, no system buttons to close the windows)

When get in system menu all the items appear but when moving on each item there is a bug when displaying the sub-menus, no way to click or the selection zone is shifted with the items underneath...

I wonder how reinstall kde to make it work with every user on the system (actually 3). To be precise I tried on each user so I can be certain that the issue is system wide. I tried with failsafe options and this is also messed.

I'm working on a different computer so I couldn't display all the different involved logs to help the kde masters to choose a specific action to solve this issue but it could be done later this evening...

Thank you !

Try running "kwin &" in Konsole, and see if it outputs any reasons as to why it isn't starting.

Also, please refresh your repositories and make sure you have the latest versions of all KDE packages installed.

afaik openSuSE Delivers KDE 4.4.2 only in a unstable repository. You maybe should think about getting in contact with the SuSE guys

First, refresh all your repositories. Then open Software Management, switch to the Repositories view, select the KDE repository you have added, then make sure that all packages have been upgraded if available.

Next, run "kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental" then logout and back in again.

I got so much troubles recently that I couldn't access any internet sites and got lotta work so... thanx for the tips... I'll try to test the solution(s) and then get back here to let you know what happened.

Another question, by the way: is there a way to set up a repair procedure to quickly and painlessly bo back to previous configuration when (by error or by vanity) someone like me tried to update kde and it failed ?

The opensuse community have not much indications than you guys, so it is for me a new key to unlock the situation... thank you !!

See you later... probably tomorrow...

As far as I am aware it isn't possible to downgrade the configuration, however changing versions between patch releases ( ie. 4.4.2 -> 4.4.1 ) may work.

Thank you for your help but I think I did a rookie mystake, my system now works only in run level 3 lol !!

Can you believe I could reinstall opensuse 11.1 kde (3.5 ?) only (in expert mode during installation) ?

I will ask for the same informations in the suse forum.

The problem is that I updated lotta things since I installed suse (at the kernel, programs, libraries, ...) and I fear to have to do the work again if things turned bad (that represents a lot of work).

Thank you again,

Soundlord

Try running "startx" when logged in as a user in a virtual terminal.
