is it possible to disable the feature to add/remove desktops when using the "desktop grid" effect? i just don't need it and don't want to see this plus/minus signs everytime i use it... i searched in "desktop grid" effects settings and in "window behavour > virtual desktops".

No need as I can tell you that I will not make that configurable. It is on porpuse set to a place where it does not cover any useful area and the visual "I don't need it" does not justify adding another option. And on the technical side DesktopGrid is a rather difficult effect to maintain and adding more options won't make it an easier task. Sorry. |

I also don't like this new feature (for the same reasons as karoshi). And I don't understand your argumentation, mgraesslin. It does cover one of my nine workspaces, it does look ugly and i think you could easily store some configfile with kde/qt.

If it covers one of your 9 workspaces than I recommend to adjust the layout of desktop grid. There are three different layout modes and the default settings are optimized for the 2x2 case.
And yes I could easily store a config option, but I talked about code maintainability and desktop grid has reached a point where it is not wise to add any more code pathes. So no, I'm not willing to risk crashers to add an option for that. |

What about having it partially hidden until you move the mouse to the edge of the screen, or having the layout not cover it?
Alternatively, putting the X buttons on each virtual desktop and only have the + button in the corner would reduce the size.

Might be an idea, but due to the maintainance problems I rather don't change it
Doesn't work as you cannot remove a desktop in the middle. You can only remove the last desktop. That's why I grouped them (also for the case of less code complexity) |

I still hate this feature. Dear mgraesslin, could u please point me to the lines of code, where i can cut this feature when compiling from source? |

sorry no, because it's used at various points in the code and you have to remove them all in the correct way or desktop grid will just stop working. That's probably explaining why I just cannot add an option to that effect.

OK, thats the way i setup my desktop in the right upper corner:
thats how it looks after adding one desktop: and another one: do i need to go on? RANT/IMHO: this doesnt look consistent... it messes up my desktop layout. just get rid of the feature to add desktops "on the fly" in general. |

Hi,
I can appreciate the reluctance to complicate the code further. So Karoshi's bluntly formulated suggestion does make some sense: simplify the code by removing the desktop-adding parts and make us users here happy (and the code cleaner, so less maintenance/bigproneness?). If other people start complaining, because they use it, then that indicates an option is really needed! Seriously: a bug/wish on KDE bugzilla that can be voted on would indicate the (non)importance of this issue to users. If it is indeed considered important, who knows, somebody might submit patches. So: did anybody in this thread open such a bug/wish yet? Otherwise I will. Best, Erik |

Sorry if I have to be blunt: I do not care at all about votes. They say nothing. KWin has at the moment 308 open feature requests and only 13 of those have 100 votes or more. Most requests have 20 or 40 votes. Considering that a user can give 20 votes to a bug that makes it something like 1 to 5 users. Considering votes at all for feature requests or fixing bugs would be unfair towards the users who like this feature and towards all the bugs which have no or not so "many" votes. If I read somewhere that you should vote on a bug or feature request to make it happen, this just means that the bug get's down to the end of the list of the bugs I might implement one day. If you want to have user input try the brainstorm section here, but trying to achieve anything on bugs.kde.org is rather unlikely to that particular issue (I won't change my mind and remove a feature I added just because there is a feature request for it). |

Join to the request. This "+|-" looks really ugly on my desktop style. And I still don't understand why you can't make an option to remove this control like in other effects (e.g. show/hide desktop name in cube). I guess you spend more time that required for implementation when answered to comments here.
What is open source for then? |

I can tell you what it's not for: people who know nothing of software design demanding that a developer add or removing a feature a couple people complain about at the risk of breaking something and potentially **** off a whole lotta people. I myself fail to see how two icons in the lower right-hand corner could possibly be in the way unless you have a very small screen, in which case you should probably use the netbook interface. |
