unlocking the screen

Thu Nov 04, 2010 9:47 am
Since my computer is only used at home at a personally controlled environment I would like to be able to unlock the screen without entering a password. I.e., by just eg. pressing the enter key. Is this possible?
Thanks

If you don't want to use a password, why are you locking the screen in the first place? You can turn off the password for the screensaver in the screensaver settings (uncheck "require password after"). The location of the screensaver config changed for 4.5, it is in "Display and Monitor" in 4.5, but I don't remember its location in previous version (you can search for it in the top-right corner of system settings).

But to answer your question, no it is not possible, because by definition locking your screen means having to enter a password. If you didn't have to enter your password, the screen wouldn't be locked in the first place, it would just be in screensaver mode.

So the solution is pretty simply: if you don't want to enter a password, don't lock your screen. If something forces you to lock your screen, that is a problem that should be fixed. But the fix should not be to change the screen locker, rather it should be to make it unnecessary in the first place.

Thanks for answering so promptly. Of course, you are right, I don't really want to "lock" my screen, just don't want to have to enter a password when I come back. Now, I use KDE 4.4.5 under Debian at the moment. When I go to "Systems Settings -> Desktop -> Screen Saver", I find that "require password to stop" is unchecked in my case. So, either this is a bug or there is some other place (which I can't find!) to specify what I want. I hope Debian goes to 4.5 soon... Thanks again and Regards

Try going to system settings->power management and see if "lock screen on resume" is checked.

Hi again, I un-checked "Lock screen on resume" but there is no change. I still have to enter a password everytime I go away for 30 minutes (which is set in "Before doing a suspend action wait...") or more.
