KDE 4.6 RC1: Kwin huge regression?

Sun Dec 26, 2010 7:12 pm
Hi all,
My system is a laptop with GeForce 9600M GT, Ubuntu Maverick and kde from ppa:kubuntu-ppa/beta.
I've just updated my KDE from 4.6 beta2 to 4.6 RC1 and without touch nothing kwin has become very un-smooth! (I've already tested it with a clean .kde config dir) with 4.6beta1 and beta2 kwin has become smoothly like never before, but with RC1 kwin is worst than kwin in kde 4.5.4.
Does anyone know what is going on???? I must send some magic command with nvidia-settings to reset my kwin smoothly? I'm sad. :'(

EDIT: gtk apps scrolling (for example firefox) also became jerky (with beta1 and beta2 instead was veeeeery smooth)

Please see Bug #258971 and if possible please try attached patch. This would help a lot. We are investigating the issue and need affected users to test the possible fix.

Ok, I'm happy to help you.

EDIT: just some little questions, are you talking about the patch attached in Comment #25 From Thomas Lübking? In the past I've compiled kde4 from svn (now git I think). I'm thinking, if applicable, to compile with apt-get source method only the affected package instead of the whole kde sc. Is this possible? if yes, do you know which package to download?
Otherwise I am ready to rebuild all from git.

I'm happy again ;D

Code: Select all
$ sudo apt-get build-dep kdebase-workspace
$ apt-get source kdebase-workspace
$ cd kdebase-workspace-4.5.90/kwin
$ patch -p0 < vsync_20101225.dff
patching file composite.cpp
patching file options.cpp
patching file scene.h
patching file scene_basic.cpp
patching file scene_opengl.cpp
patching file scene_opengl.h
patching file scene_xrender.cpp
patching file workspace.h
patching file workspace.cpp
$ cd ..
$ dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot -uc -b -d (-d just for kde-sc-dev-latest >= 4:4.5.90 absence)
$ sudo dpkg -i *.deb

logout/login and then KWIN (and the whole system) has come back smooth like never!

So yes, the patch has worked. Thank you for your support.
