Is there any way to get the "maximize" function of OS X (the green pebble) which sets the window size to the largest size the document will cover on the screen? It's most useful when one has a lot horizontal space that goes unused by windows maximazed width-wise.

I'm not sure I follow. Could you post a screenshot?

One would need to provide a screencast to show it and unfortunately I don't have OS X. Perhaps I can describe it better. In OS X, there is no "maximize to full viewing area". Instead there is a button (the green + in the titlebar labeled 'zoom') which "maximizes" (or sometimes shrinks!) to best fit the size of the document.
Here's an article discussing the differences between how "maximize" works on OS X and how it works on Windows (and KDE and Gnome, etc.): http://www.forevergeek.com/2006/09/mac_ ... ze_button/ Compiz has something sort of similar called 'maximumize', but it's not really the same at all. That's just a manual form of tiling, I guess. |

I don't know if this is possible. The document would need some way to report how big it should be. I don't know if this information is available to kwin or not.

No that is not possible. The information is missing, it would require to change all applications.
