Hey all. I just upgraded to 4.6 on my HP Mini netbook. It's a bit older netbook, it has an Intel 945GME graphics chipset and a dual core Intel Atom CPU.

Last night I upgraded from 4.5 to 4.6 on the netbook interface and now Present Windows (the default action on the Current Application Control) freezes whenever it comes up. I can move the mouse around and click on a window and after a few minutes that window will present, but otherwise it seems nonfunctional while that is up.

Just for grins I tried switching to the desktop interface and on there, the window previews freeze. Again, the mouse works fine, but KWin seems to be inoperable.

I tried to follow the steps in the sticky thread (viewtopic.php?f=111&t=91663), but neither setting seemed to effect anything (they both seemed to be working properly).

The message I AM getting on the console is several repeated lines of:

i915_program_error: Can't find free R reg
i915_program_error: Exceeded max temporary reg: 28/16

The first number in the second message changes around but it is always 16 or higher.

Anybody have any ideas?

edit: I guess I should also note that all these things worked in 4.5 and below.

Unfortunately it seems that changes to Present Windows have increased it's hardware requirements, which your Intel 945GME is unable to meet. Please file a bug report at bugs.kde.org.

I had the same problems with a minor version of 4.5, both on my Desktop and Netbook. In my case it was the Lanczos filter that caused the problem, see my solution in this topic.

Thanks, Hans!! So I could verify that XRender worked correctly, but it looked horrible in comparison. I followed the steps you said except that grepping .xsession didn't give me anything. Instead I ran kwin --replace in the terminal and got this:
Code: Select all
OpenGL vendor string:                   Tungsten Graphics, Inc
OpenGL renderer string:                 Mesa DRI Intel(R) 945GME GEM 20100330 DEVELOPMENT x86/MMX/SSE2
OpenGL version string:                  1.4 Mesa 7.9-devel
Driver:                                 Intel
GPU class:                              i915/i945
OpenGL version:                         1.4
Mesa version:                           7.9
X server version:                       1.9
Linux kernel version:                   2.6.35
Direct rendering:                       yes
Requires strict binding:                yes
GLSL shaders:                           no
Texture NPOT support:                   yes

So in my blacklist I currently have: (Some of these were already there...
Code: Select all
[Blacklist][Lanczos]
Advanced Micro Devices=DRI R600:-:7.8.1,DRI R600:-:7.8.2
Intel=GM45 Express Chipset GEM 20100328:-:7.8.2,GM45 Express Chipset GEM 20091221:-:7.7.1,965GM GEM 20100328 2010Q1:-:7.8.2,965GM GEM 20091221 2009Q4:-:7.7.1,Ironlake Mobile GEM 20100328:-:7.8.2,945GME GEM 20100330:-:7.9

My contribution was 945GME GEM 20100330:-:7.9

Now it works great in OpenGL, in fact it's way faster than it was in 4.5. Is this something that could be added to the Desktop Effects settings? Seems like a button to click to add your driver to the blacklist would be pretty handy.

I thought I was pretty alone with this issue since I have an old graphic card on my Desktop computer, but then I surprisingly got the same problem on my Netbook (fairly common GMA 950). You're the first user other than me I've seen who's asked about it, though.

Let's see if the KWin developers spot this and what they have to say about it.

Just want to note that I ran into this issue on a fresh 11.04 again. Present Windows doesn't necessarily freeze, but it is REALLY slow and causes TONS of CPU usage every time it comes up.

However, it appears that the above fix (using the Blacklist) doesn't work anymore. Anyone know how to fix?
