Hi all!
After upgrading to KDE 4.6 (on Arch Linux) the "desktop cube" effect leads to the freeze of X immediately after I quit from the cube rotation to any desktop. I.e., I acivate the cube (Ctrl+F11), rotate cube as along as I want (works fine), then quit from rotation regime to any Desktop (right mouse button) and... it freezes the X. For a couple of seconds even the mouse pointer does not move, then it begins to move but no reaction from any other elements of the interface. Sometimes after 10-30 secs everything restores, sometimes after a minute I have the message that "Desktop effects have been suspended..." and system returns to life, but sometimes the freeze is total. Pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 takes it some time to switch to the console. There I can login and sometimes "top" shows that X takes 97% of proc. Free memory is far enough. If I try to switch back to X I see the black screen. Restarting the kdm always help. Once the freeze was so deep that only the power button helped (no reaction to Ctrl+Alt+F1). I tried other effects. It looks like that everything else works perfectly. If I switch desktops by mouse wheel or pager it works fine and cube rotation is animated, no freese. So, the problem appears only if I activate the cube rotation. I tried to switch off the "Blur", no effect. My system information:
From ~/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc
Any ideas? Thank you in advance! |

Does your ~/.xsession-errors say anything when you experience the freeze?

The only record I found in ~/.xsession-errors "around" the freeze is:
but I suppose that it always appear when I switch from and back to X via Ctrl+alt+F1 |

Same issue here...I've tried numerous versions of nvidia drivers and it's always the same. If you look in your dmesg output, you will see a line like this when this issue occurs:
[ 287.600832] NVRM: Xid (0000:01:00): 13, 0003 00000000 00008297 00001b0c 1000f010 00000040 That is the only desktop effect I've found so far that causes this. I'm convinced it's not the drivers since I've tried it on the nvidia 260 and 270 series drivers and get the same results. |

Same problem here. I'm running kubuntu maverick with kde 4.6 and the latest Nvidia drivers from x-swat ppa. This must be kde/kwin 4.6 related because with the same drivers on the same system running maverick with kde 4.5.5 this did not ever happen.
Any ideas? |

That would be nice, but I've never done this before...I'll wait for the 4.6.1 upgrade which should be available soon...

I noticed that after last night's updates (kernel and other stuff), desktop cube effect doesn't freezes x. Strange but it made me happy!

Also experiencing freeze issues when exiting Desktop cube. Perhaps a NVIDIA issue? I experienced some other 3D glitches in overlays as well when enabling 3D effects in KDE. I am still trouble shooting. For now I will disable 3D cube effect until I see some updates that can explain how to fix this or actually fixes this bug.
Have the following specs. Downloaded and installed the latest drivers from NVIDIA using .run package as the OpenSUSE 11.4 x86_64 bit drivers has some issues. The cube bug happens whether or not I am running a Virtual machine or so it seems. |

Same problem here (freeze of desktop when leaving cube animation triggered by "Strg F11") for Opensuse 11.4 with KDE 4.6.2 (from Opensuse KDE factory repository) and the latest Nvidia driver 260.19.44 on a 460 GTX graphics card.
I tried to use an older version 256 of the Nvidia driver - however it would not compile with the present kernel. |
