KWin effects unstable.

Wed Feb 09, 2011 6:10 pm
Hi

Since I upgraded to KDE 4.6, I've had a few problems with the stability of KWin effects.

At random points, Kwin crashes and refuses to restart unless I delete ~/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc, the only solution I have found to my problem so far.

I also find that I have window tearing appear after some time, usually within 15 mins of a new session. I can change a setting in System Settings/Desktop Effects/Advance to solve the problem or restart X but it always returns.

I use Arch 64.
My card is an NVIDIA 260.
I use the drivers 260.19.36-2.
This is my xorg.conf

Code: Select all
# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig:  version 260.19.36  (buildmeister@swio-display-x86-rhel47-01.nvidia.com)  Tue Jan 18 17:15:22 PST 2011

Any ideas on how to bring some stability to my desktop?

Thanks in advance

you could try the Nvidia 270.18 drivers (or revert to the 256 series) to test if it's the driver

try changing window and plasma styles?

with this kind of problem creating and testing as a new user will determine if there's a bad/corrupt config file

OpenSuse Leap 42.1 x64, Plasma 5.x

I think I'd overlooked the fact that the Blur effect isn't working too well - I've switched it off and all seems stable now. Shame as I think it sets things off nicely.

I appreciate your help though, thanks.

blur should work fine with NVIDIA, but it is a known issue that the latest NVIDIA drivers are causing problems - ever since they started to count with a 2 in the beginning. Personally I'm still with 195

I'll try that and hopefully that will sort things out.

Thanks!
