KWin refresh rate always 60 FPS?

Fri Mar 18, 2011 2:44 pm
Greetings, how come KWin always get max of 60 FPS (according to FPS plugin) even though ATI drivers set it to 75. I set 75 in Display options through KDE as well but KWin is still using maximum of 60 and it feels sort of laggy. I'm using ATI Radeon HD 5700 with proprietary drivers, KDE 4.6 on OpenSUSE 11.4. I also tried setting RefreshRate=75 in kwinrc with no go...

Cheers in advance :)

what's the refresh rate on your monitor? if 60Hz, then vsync is matching your fps with your refresh rates. Why is this desireable? See http://www.tweakguides.com/Graphics_9.html

My monitor refresh rate is 75. I have tried turning vsync off and back on, same result. Without KWin effects, however, everything is smooth.

try disabling effects one at a time to see if that helps, start with blur

maybe ATI has rsync enabled, can you disable vsync in ATI?

Still same. It's just like KWin has some sort of fps cap. Now I've tried KDE on my Dell laptop with nvidia - still no more than 60 fps (it should be around 65).

might be bug - you could report it on bugs.kde.org
