Blur function : more custom options ?

Tue Mar 22, 2011 10:58 pm
Hi all !

I'm using KDE 4.5.5 and Kwin. Since I loOove transparency (much s exier than opaque windows of OSX or Windope), I set my konsole transparency to 100%. But it is not blurred ! >> unusable :'(

Though, Kwin doesn't blur Cairo dock neither and that's a good thing : no awful blur cloud on the top of my desktop.

I think it will be nice if we had a better blur menu, so that we can set, for example :
Code: Select all
[ ] Don't blur any transparent window except :
[X] Blur every window transparent except :
> cairo-dock
> kicker

Don't you think ?

I think it is okay for the applications to decide when they don't want blur for their explicitly transparent areas.
Note that on Konsole, the window around the console area is blurred while the console area is not blurred. My preference would be for Konsole to allow blurring the console area since when I'm working in the console I don't want to be distracted by what's behind it, I want to see the console text (I don't like having to move it to its own desktop just so that I can see it. Other people have stated that they don't want blur for the console area in Konsole because they like to watch movies through the console area (e.g. vlc in background, fullscreen Konsole in foreground).

I don't think that allowing the user to pick and choose which applications use blur in a global setting is a very good idea, because nobody would ever use it.

If I recall correctly, each transparent application is able to set whether blurring is enabled for it or not. I think the problem is that the performance of the blur effect is not good enough for them to turn on blurring behind whole windows like that. Whatever the reason, at this point they explicitly decided not to enable it behind konsole.

I made a jump to 4.6.1 and back to 4.5.5
In 4.6.1, you can blur Konsole. Not in 4.5.5... strange...

EDIT : sometimes work, some other times not : even stranger ><"

One should be able to set transparent menus to blur as well. In fact, transparent menus aren't much usable without blurring. More blur options would be very much welcome, especially since the drastic performance improvements to the blur effect.
