System logs out when screensaver is turned off

I have recently upgraded to KDE 4.6. Everything is running OK, except whenever my screensaver turns on, the system logs out. I have disabled the screensaver for the moment, which is not too much of a problem, but I can't lock the screen either, which I sometimes need to do.

Has anyone had the same problem? or got a solution?

Does this behavior happen under a new user?

Have you recently changed to an OpenGL based screen saver?

Hi, I'm having the same issue in KDE version 4.6.3 using Arch Linux. This did not occur in the previous version, 4.6.2.

When Enabling a Screensaver and Not Checking the "Require Password After" Box, a Password is now always required regardless of the settings when ending the screensaver to resume where you left off in KDE 4.6.3.

It appears the machine 'logs out' when ending the screensaver, and then you must log back in with your user password.

The configuration file "kscreensaverrc", contains the following:

-----
[ScreenSaver]
Enabled=true
Lock=false
LockGrace=60000
PlasmaEnabled=false
Saver=KSolarWinds.desktop
Timeout=60
-----

The "Lock" parameter is correctly set to "false". Regardless, when moving the mouse (or touchpad), or pressing a key to end the screensaver, a login box appears and the user password must be entered to reenter the normal KDE
session. If a file was previously open and unsaved, all becomes lost.

I filed a bug report for this:

Bug #273107 - KDE Logs Out when Ending an OpenGL Based Screensaver (KDE 4.6.3)

My screensaver is OpenGL based ("Ksolarwinds"). I tried two other OpenGL related tests: (1) Ran an application called "Mame Plus Gui" which also uses OpenGL and played one of the old arcade games. After leaving the game, KDE logged out completely and I had to enter my username to log back in. (2) I tested out a non-OpenGL based Screensaver and KDE did NOT log out.

So, apparently, it seems this issue might be related to a problem with OpenGL and Kwin.

If KDE is logging out completely it is probable that the OpenGL screen saver is interacting badly with your Intel graphics drivers and causing X to crash. You will need to switch to a non OpenGL screensaver.

The OpenGL screensavers worked perfectly with KDE 4.6.2. What changed in 4.6.3 that broke it? I doubt it's the interaction with the Intel Graphics driver and OpenGL that's causing the issue since it worked well in the previous version of KDE.

KWin uses OpenGL to power it's desktop effects, so the change could be in there. Unfortunately bugs in the graphics stack are fairly hard to trace.

Thanks for this info @ubuntuku. I traced the link you provided to the original "FreeDesktop Bugzilla" bug report ( https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=32303 ) entitled "Massive screen corruption after screensaver stop" and it appears that disabling "Page Flipping" in Xorg only temporarily solves the problem until the real issue in the Xorg driver is detected and fixed.

It is currently not possible to adjust, disable, and test "Page Flipping" in Xorg (via /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-intel.conf) prior to boot-up due to those options no longer being available. I'll have to wait until an actual code fix is comitted upstream.

Full screen OpenGL applications and OpenGL KDE screensavers NO LONGER crash KDE / Kwin on my Arch Linux OS. This issue seems to be resolved upon the recent release of the Mesa OpenGL 3D Graphics Library 7.11 drivers for Linux. It's working well so far!

Note, in KDE's "Desktop Effects" settings, when "Suspend Desktop Effects for Fullscreen Windows" is *NOT* Checked, this works perfectly. However, when it *IS* checked, the system system crashes upon using any full screen OpenGL Apps / Screensavers.

As I see it, this thread can be marked as [SOLVED].

Below are my system specifications and KDE 4.7.0 configuration graphics settings. Hopefully, this information might assist others having the same issue.
