openSUSE vs Kubuntu

Fri Apr 22, 2011 5:46 pm
Hello everyone :)

First of all, I'm sorry that I'm starting a new topic, but i haven't found anything similiar as my problem..

I have a problem with KDE in Kubuntu (in 10.10 and in 11.04 beta2) – A lot of Kwin effects doesn’t work (like blur, wobbly windows, and some other) with OpenGL = i enable the blur, but panel bg isnt blurred.. (and with Xrender they dont work at all - some popup blinks out with "kwin cant enable these effects: blur, wobbly windows..")
But with openSUSE 11.4 on same computer all effects work without any problems..

I think its probably something about drivers, but im not sure..

I don’t know if you can help me, but I hope you can

Best regards,
Martin (aka bazdesh :D)

We need to know what graphics card you have. There are differences in driver, xorg, and mesa versions between different distros.

IMHO for KDE users openSuse is a better option:

1. KDE is a second citizen at Ubuntu, updates come later (please do not start flame war at this)

2. Ubuntu is about the bleeding edge, so there is the new X.org, drivers, kernel, GRUB etc. so things are a bit *more unstable*. Nothing specific about KDE in this point.

I shifted from using Kubuntu to openSuse and I am not missing anything. In fact many things are just same except some random package not in openSuse (but there are vast custom repos like Ubuntu PPAs and its much same universe just different galaxy). However the KDE experience in openSuse is better than Kubuntu, might be due to newer KDE too)
