shadow in kwin 4.7

Tue Jun 28, 2011 12:03 pm
I cannot find a shadow plugin under desktop effects in kde 4.7, though oxygen has its own shadow system other widget themes such as skulpture don't have them, so are there any other ways to activate shadow for them?

Does Thomas' BeShadowed work with 4.7?

I was also wondering about this.

According to the KDE site, regarding the 4.7 update:

"KWin has a new shadow system, improving support for users of older hardware or hardware for which driver support for OpenGL is limited (Xrender backend)."

http://kde.org/announcements/4.7/plasma.php

Well it's an interesting way of improving them :)

This likely wasn't intended - whilst some effects may not be supported, those that are should be shown.

please see http://blog.martin-graesslin.com/blog/2 ... no-oxygen/
All users who do not use our default Oxygen widget style and window decoration might have had an unpleasant surprise after upgrading to 4.7. Our old shadow effect provided generic shadows for all windows no matter which widget style or decoration is used. In case the decoration provided its own shadow that one was preferred.
The new shadow system does not provide any generic shadow. The compositor is just providing a service to the widget style for rendering the shadow. This means that the widget style has to implement support for the new shadows.

Ahh. Much, MUCH googling has been leading me to that conclusion.
I still think it odd for the KDE people to announce a new shadow system as a release feature when they know of only 2 themes for certain that make use of it.

Also, it seems oxygen is using this new shadow system right?
Well it may well be an improvement code-wise but I don't think oxygen's shadows look particularly great and you cannot really customize it much without look really fugly.

A big thumbs down from me.

Skulpture window decoration has shadows in git/master. They aren't configurable, though (tell me how they need to be changed).

If I remember correctly, oxygen has an option (either in system-settings or the oxygen-settings app) to remove borders (not the titlebar) from maximised windows, which should solve that problem I imagine.

I just wanted to register to say... Thank you!
This started again a few days ago and it was driving me crazy, to be honest. Like you, the panel shadow also went above maximized windows. I tried what you said and the shadow is gone now. :)

Anyway, in case someone doesn't know, the file you have to edit is (you can open it with Kate):

/usr/share/apps/desktoptheme/$your_current_theme$/widgets/panel-background.svgz

And search for the line with "shadow" in it. At least in my case, the line was: inkscape:pageshadow="2"
And just remove it. Save and that's it. :)
