Some effects has bad performance...

Sat Sep 03, 2011 6:39 am
I had installed Fedora 15 with KDE4.6 and ALL ran very smooth, but when I installed updates, some effects such mini & maximizing, workspace swithing etc lost their performance, but woobly windows works still very smooth :o

Yesterday I installed Arch Linux with KDE 4.7 and there is similar problem, but bad performance of some effects is 'out of the box'

My PC.
2GB RAM, PHENOM II X4 955, HD5670 1GB DDR5 + opensource driver.

Can you help me?

UPDATE

OMG ! When I disabled V sync, the animations runs now smooth, but woobly windows now have worse performance :P

Why all effects can't run smooth?

This is likely a matter of the level of optimisation needed for each effect KWin has differs depending on the driver in use, and it's version. Different drivers and hardware will handle 3D effects differently.

Hi everyone !

Still have some performance issues as well, I don't know what to do. It's usable, obviously, but it's still pretty jerky. (in KDE 4.7.x, 4.8.0 ; under Kubuntu and Arch Linux ; with both Nouveau and Nvidia drivers, with 2 different Nvidia cards - a low end and a pretty good one).

- When I just open 2 windows and grab & move the other one, the beginning of the animation is jerky then it gets smooth

- Minimizing is not smooth at all (as well as most effects, but not all of them ; for instance, not Exposé)

It was even worse at the beginning, because a monitor frequency array was specified in my xorg.conf -> I set it at 60.0. I also tried to disable TwinView so that xrandr returns the correct frequency. I tried different rendering modes, disabling plugins etc etc.

But I'm beginning to wonder : is that normal ? Maybe everyone experiences this ? (on the same setup : Mutter is butter smooth all the time and Compiz is not 100% smooth, but there's an acceptable constant framerate, when kwin varies a lot.

Please tell me if I can help ;-) !
Cheers

Edit : I think, maybe, performance was better in KDE 4.6 ; not perfect but better overall.

Likely the oxygen animation is -along the nvidia pixmap allocation, which has however quite improved at least here- the culprit.

Run "kcmshell4 kwindecoration", press "configure decoration", then "advanced", enter the animations tab and deactivate the "active window state change" animation. See whether the issue remains.
