I've got a problem where, after my machine has been on for several days to several weeks, and I try to start a new application, doesn't seem to matter what it is, a tab will open up on the tool bar with a rotating arrow but the application will not open. Eventually the tab on the tool bar will go away.
If I close some or all of my other open applications then, sometimes, the new application start will start. Other times I can then start a new application. If I log out and log back in the auto start applications start up and I can then start new applications. I do not need to restart the system to allow me to start new applications. I'm running a AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 955 Processor, with 6GB of memory, Ubuntu 11.4 upgraded from 10.10. I've had this problem since I purchased this system with 10.10 from Zareason. uname -a reports: Linux limbo 2.6.38-11-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jul 29 19:02:55 UTC 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux The Plasma memory monitor has never shown more that a couple of GB memory usage, so I don't believe I'm running out of memory. Any other information or logs that would help to solve this issue will be gladly supplied, as I am rather baffled. Thanks in advance for any insite you may have, Greg |

I've just had the problem happen again. When I run applications from the command line I get no output. They start up just as if there were no problems. ps shows then running and I can kill them or cancel them with ^C.
I'm running the version of KDE that is current for Ubuntu 11.4, it looks like it's 4.6.2. Also, when I click on the time widget in the task bar, initially I get an empty callendar dialog. I clicked in it and got the calendar, and now when I click the time I get the calendar comming up correctly. I also renamed my .xsessions-errors file to easily see if I was getting and X errors and it has not been replaced, so I'm not getting any X errors, just not getting any new windows. Please let me know if there's anything else that I can doto provide more information to help solve this problem. |

you mean (K)Ubuntu 11.04? Kde 4.7 is available, upgrading might help http://digitizor.com/2011/07/30/install ... y-narwhal/
you went 3 weeks with it running ok? |

I'm not using this machine much right now, so the long time doesn't mean much.
And you're right, I should have said Kubuntu 11.4. I'll try upgrading to KDE 4.7. Thanks |

other thing to try is as a different user as possibly a config file got corrupted
other things to try: - remove your kde temp folder ~/.kde/tmp-account_name - run kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental |
