Two related usability issues:
1: When I open an archive with Ark (almost any format: zip, gzip, bzip) the option from the Main menu -> Action -> Extract -> Quick extract to is disabled regardless of permissions. There should be a menu option to "Extract archive to" or/and "Extract archive to... (dialog with advanced options)" 2: Extract button on the toolbar serves as a button that does "extract to" (as required by the previous issue) and as a dropdown for quick extract to previously used folders. It's far from obvious that it serves this double role. I suggest separating the "quick extract" button from the "extract to... (dialog)" button. These are small issues, but important for the overall 'feel' of the system. IMO a quick to use system is all about not having to think where to find buttons. |

Hi there, I\'m one of the Ark maintainers. Both of the issues you mention are related to bug 190507 (https://bugs.kde.org/190507), so it would be nice if someone with enough karma marked this thread as "In Progress".
* Quick extract disabled: this isn\'t really a bug, but a usability woe. "Quick extract to" is always disabled because it\'s just a label for you to select one of the recently used directories below it. * Menu option for Extract to/Separate quick extract and extract to: this is what the bug report is about. I\'ve been discussing this on the kde-usability mailing list, but it\'s a bit hard to reach a consensus, basically because it would require separating the Extract and Quick Extract actions into two different buttons, the latter not doing anything when pressed (which is another usability problem), or just showing the recent directories as a menu item, separated from Extract To. The kde-usability thread can be read at http://lists.kde.org/?t=124615717500052&r=1&w=2 Cheers. |
