i think it would look more professional and give a more seamless impression if the wallpaper used at kdm login would not change at the moment the kde splash appears.. i think one wallpaper change during login is enough

As far as I know, KDM, splash and desktop wallpaper are different apps/things. However you cam set same picture in any/all of them manually (or its done by your distro). Its quite easy.

Having different a different backgrounds allows designers to create nice effects. They are also useful, since they give user feedback about your OS *booting* status.

I know they are different apps, but I've always wondered what the purpose of a separate KDE splash screen is, I think that when the system is using KDM, there should be no KDE splash screen per say, just the KDM screen with a "loading" message/throbber/percentage bar.

The splash screen would appear only if the user is using another logon manager (i.e GDM) to load KDE.

The, "SimpleSmall" splash screen only uses a small box, letting the background show from KDM and then from Plasma. Maybe something similar could be done for Oxygen/Air splash screens? Or is it just plain ugly?

The showing of KDM's background is actually a bug, and that would be vulnerable to showing "corruption" effects.

As far as I'm informed it is planed that KDM will use Plasma to show itself in future. Then I think the backgrounds of KDM, the KDE Splash-screen and Plasma will be the same.

It wouldn't be that bad if kdm and the start splash used the same aspect ratio. I have a 16:10 screen and it seems that kdm displays the background centered (or resized with aspect ratio kept) while KDE's splash resizes the background completely which results in a small flickering when the background gets resized.
I especially noticed this in openSuse where kdm and start splash look very identical. Even they have that problem with resizing background.

I don't think this is really valid anymore, since both the KDM screen and splash screen are being ported to plasma.

TheBlackCat: link to confirm this? Then we can mark this as in progress.

It is already partially ported as a gsoc.

but it is still a work in progress and I don't know if someone is currently maintaining/working on it
