I like one of the new features of thunderbird 3:
base on the email address, thunderbird looks in an online database to get the configuration of the email provider (server dns name, ports, authentication required...)

I suppose that the mozilla people will allow kmail to connect to their database as well.

I wouldn't rely on an online database for this information: I'd actually more likely make this available locally, perhaps with some build-in defaults for the most common E-mail systems (hotmail, GMail, Yahoo, etc.), then have it guess more common E-mail settings ("me@sky.com" will try for IMAP server: sky.com, imap.sky.com and for SMTP server: sky.com, smtp.sky.com, auth.smtp.sky.com).

I agree that this is a much-overdue requirement for easy adding of E-mail addresses to these clients and, fortunately, it actually ties in well with another idea I was brewing which I might post up here sometime.

I think, that better way could be creating file format to shares mail box settings. After user creates account, it will only click on button to open mail box account data in special application.

It could be also a local database and if it failed with it it could look up online database. Anyway, this is very good idea.

Maybe this should be implemented directly into the IMAP/POP3/SMTP Akonadi plug-ins...

You have right, but also we need sharing a password, I think.

The password is most likely stored in kwallet anyway, so it would boil down to using the same "key" to locate it.

In the case of an Akonadi setup, only the resource agent needs to know the password, all applications just talk to the Akonadi server
