I think it would be nice if I could say to KDE change environment to project1 and all kind of stuff happen, e.g. default profile in kmail changes to specific one related to that project, korganizer shows related calendars, default directory in konsole changes to that project's dir etc. A lot of possibilities here IMO...
May be somehow related to desktop activity, but I think it should be above that (desktop activity should change when env changes)...

Already in development - this will be the purpose of activities.

No idea - we're still laying out the ground work. After it is included in the KDE Workspace (Plasma, KWin etc.) which is planned for 4.6, it will need to be supported by apps as well. I wouldn't count on it being before 4.7 or something.

There is some work being done for the next release of plasma. (you can see a photo of me presenting at http://news.kde.org/2014/01/24/plasma-t ... -barcelona :) )

As for other applications, some have announced support (ktp, pim) for separating data depending on activities, but I can not really speak for them.

just to add to this, it would be cool if an activity can do a kind of chroot to an activity home directory (at least as far as application settings), e.g.
/home/user/.activies/activities1/chrome
/home/user/.activies/activities2/chrome
/home/user/.activies/activities3/chrome

Using the example above would allow me to have different bookmarks in the chrome browser within the three different activities, as an example.

this would eliminate the need for applications to support or even be aware of activities or even specifically support KDE to make them highly configurable on an activity basis.
