Hi,
I must admit that I'm not sure, that this is the correct place to ask this, but as I noticed this first on amarok...

since a few days I'm testing amarok 2.5.0 on WinXP for it's use as collection list manager/player.
After successfully scanning an external test directory (NAS) with amarok, I noticed that the few AAC among the majority of mp3 files were missing.

Trying to "play media.." those directly from the Amarok menu doesn't work either. (without any error message!)
I tagged them with MP3tag with artist+album, but also that didn't help.
VLC plays them, recognizing them as "MPEG AAC Audio (mp4a)" but does not show the given tags.

So, I think there must be something wrong with these AACs.
With my small knowledge of AAC I could not tell if there is something like a mp4 contaimer around the AAC when looking at the hexdump.

Now, please, could sombody help me how to diagnose the AACs

Many thanks in advance,

What does the 'file --mime-type' command report the mimetype of the AAC files to be?

Thanks for the answer,

the "file --mime-type some.aac" run on XP looking at the network share was telling "audio/x-hx-aac-adts"
Same command applied to some.mp3 is giving an "audio/mpeg" type.

It should work now, this was just committed to git: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=303253, comments 25 and 26.

Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ...

Thanks for the hint, Mamarok!

However, I'll have to wait for the next beta release. I have no means to compile from git here,
but that's ok,

Thanks again,

Are you unable to try sudo apt-get build-dep amarok and sudo apt-get install git? Not entirely sure it would work for the dev version anyways, but there's no need to compile it. Check out the KDE Goodies PPA if it still exists(can't seem to access it on Launchpad atm, odd). It pulls the latest git updates and builds them in to a ready to use package. Just need to run sudo apt-get install amarok-git. Generally it is rather stable from what Sumski has told me. However, using the July 31 build and seem to be able to see aac files with in amarok when browsing for files, but I am not able to play them back. Also, when trying to edit the tags for .acc files with in amarok, the settings do not save.

It seems that Amarok just didn't like the aac files I was throwing at it. The files I threw at it were demuxed from youtube music videos. I think I used Avidemux but can't recall off hand. The other aac files I tested that worked was also a demux from a youtube video. The difference was it was split using FLVExtract(I was a windows user at the time), and ran through FreeAudioDub(like I said, I was a windows user at the time). I could have sworn that amarok played the "bad" aac before I did a reinstall of Kubuntu trying to eliminate a problem that crept in during my previous run on Kubuntu. I tested a bunch of previously demuxed and demuxed+edited aac files with no problem in Kubuntu. I guess it just doesn't like the way avidemux demuxed the video.

Thanks Xplorerer4x4,

well the youtube aspect is interesesting. IIRC i got these AACs by doing somewhat like "ffmpeg -acodec copy -i youtube-file outfile.aac" when they contain mp4.
But I can't verify because that linuxbox isn't with me anymore. That's also one reason for doing this on XP, so no apt-get possible, I'm afraid.

Thanks again
