Amarok 2.6 and MTP (Galaxy Nexus)

Sat Sep 08, 2012 12:51 pm
Hey everybody!

If I use mtp-send I can send music files to my Galaxy Nexus which uses MTP.

Amarok 2.6 however tells me for any file I drop on the Nexus' collection entry in amarok that it already exists on the phone – which is obviously wrong.

Does anybody have a Galaxy Nexus working with Amarok 2.6?

I had a Google Nexus 7 with Android 4.1 (since sold) and I could not get anything transfered to it using mtp (even tried libmtp9-1.1.4) and Dolphin (did not try mtp-send) it kept telling me it could not rename the transfered file. Finally I found jmtpfs which worked but needs to be compiled http://research.jacquette.com/jmtpfs-ex ... and-linux/

Google'ing saw lots of others with problems, the most common solution I saw was creating a udev rule and for some it worked but not for me

Never tried using Amarok

jmtpfs works, but that does not answer why it fails in amarok 2.6. :) It might be a hint though that it's really an amarok issue since if I understood correctly jmtpfs uses limtp as well. Hence it should also fail if libmtp was the culprit.

if you use mtpfs to mount the Galaxy Nexus can you use Dolphin to transfer file to it?

Indeed, with jmtpfs. You might run into some i/o errors which can be solved by switching the nexus to ptp and back to mtp.

Basically what I did was to install jmtpfs from openSUSE's buildservice and then:

Code: Select all
mkdir ~/nexus

plug-in your nexus
Code: Select all
jmtpfs ~/nexus/

and finally
Code: Select all
fusermount -u nexus

to unmount.

Wasn't "indeed" clear enough?

Ah wait, you want me to try mtpfs… What would that prove that has not been yet?

it would show that maybe Amarok was not the issue, that it was something else

As mentioned mtp-send works. Amarok does not.
jmtpfs works, amarok does not.

jmtpfs is a FUSE and libmtp based filesystem for accessing MTP devices. As it works this hints towards libmtp not being at fault either.

Amarok does not use mtpfs but libmtp. So I do not see any connection there.

kio-mtp works as well.

amarok can play music from the device but dropping songs on the Nexus' collection still fails. Since everything but amarok works I guess chances are that it's amarok failing.

JFYI: kio-mtp is brand new code, it is only in playground since 7 days, so simply not implemented yet.

AFAIK you are not paying us to develop, so either give us the time to use the resources to the best we can (in our free time, as we are all working on Amarok as volunteers), do it yourself or pay somebody to do it. That is how Free Software works, being nasty is not going to make this better.

Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ...

Hello nasty!, or how else should I interpret your last sentence? AFAIK you are not paying me to test amarok and trying to find out where the bug comes from, i.e. whether it is a libs thing or amarok itself. A nice combination of reading something into my posts and only picking the bits that suit your arguments. kio-mtp is brand new, jmtpfs etc. not.

Have fun, I'm off this issue and app. the MTP bit is unmaintained anyway.

You had all the time in the world and Amarok still sucks. How much more time do you need!?
