Amarok sets my USB drive to only read permissions

Hello!

When I try to read my collection with amarok 2.6 (fresh install, new database on mysql database) amarok finds a lot of duplicates. I am quite sure there are none but still ... After a while the scanning stops with a "found duplicates error. So I tried to move some of the files in question. But I can't move them anymore (located on USB-disk, USB and massstorage plugins deactivated, tried it also with activated!). The whole drive doesn't grant me write permissions anymore! I close amarok and restart or relogin and my permissions are alright again ...

What is amarok doing here? I don't want any program to have this much control over my system.

And how can I read my collection while there might be some duplicates (which I want to have cause they belong to different albums and are different versions).
I read the hint to use amarok labels or tags but that is not an option, cause there are too many. And I don't have any collection in Amarok because it does stop scanning after an error message about duplicates ...

Worked fine three month ago by the way ...

thx for reading,
piedro

p.s.: I tried to only scan ONE folder - still the whole disk is set to only read permissions. Also Amarok seems to ignore my settings to import only ONE folder (one album). It is rescanning a whole lot - i don't know what ...

Amarok doesn't modify anything in the permissions, that must have been a solid issue if you couldn't access the drive.

Just so you don't make false presumptions: you should not set Amarok to read a USB disk as if it were a media player, that takes ages as it will invariably scan the whole drive, instead add that folder to the collection. There never was an option to just scan just one folder.

FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ...

Thanks for your answer,

I have done a thorough check on the hard drive and there has been some incorrect blocks. I repaired these and haven't had the permission settings since!
But the option to just read one folder exists by editing the invisble ".is_audio_player" file in the root directory of the drive. In there you can set the folder for Musik and Podcasts which i did.

I still can't get the local collection to run from the external harddrive.

thx anyway, cheers,

A local collection should be set in the database, so select that folder and add it to the collection. A hard drive is simply not a suitable media player. Also we do not expect the users to edit hidden files.

FWIW: my collection is on an external hard disc connected by USB, it is not set to be scanned as a media player but the folder is set as collection.

thx for your answer.

I tried to do it hesame way as you did setup your collection, but I am unable to get all the files in my collection. the full scan finds many false duplicates and there seems to be no way of adding those afterwards ... I am stuck ...

thx anyway,

What are the figures? And are you sure that you do not have that many duplicates? FWIW, please also make sure you have all your tag set correctly, for that I suggest you use a mass-tagger application like kid3 or easytag or picard.

Yes everything is tagged perfectly with picard and the files that are somehow not coorectly and completely tagged are not included - I keep them elsewhere.
So yes I am sure the files have all unique IDs (by picard that is) and I still can't get many files included - number? I am not sure but it seems like evry 5th album is missing at least one often up to 7-8 files. They are however present in the folder, all standard mp3, tagged and have the correct permissions.

I checked the bug lists and there seem to be problems with false duplication ... but I can't see any workaround ...

thx for your effort,
piedro

p.s. : I forgot to mention that I completely removed Amarok also, deleted databases and settings and restarted fresh - no result - just same same ...

Very strange, I have never seen any missing files in albums and I have hundreds here, so something must be either wrong in the tagging (identical id3 tags, missing tags like track numbers, etc.) or with the way your collection is read.

Could you please run the amarokcollectionscanner from a konsole, amarokcollectionscanner --help will show you the available options.

thx for the hint. I scanned only the folder with a david bowie album. There are 18 mp3 in there. The scanner scans them all - no errors. Then I start amarok - they don't show up. Next I told amarok(GUI) to scan ONLY that one folder - voila there's all the files. Then I get brave and scan 4 albums of David bowie at once with amarok, complete rescan - and again 16 mp3s are missing ... I am really confused. So now I am ticking only two folders in the collection settings in amarok. Do a full rescan (well that's quick) but now there's still four albums in amarok - the two folders I unticked are not removed from the collection. Still shows 62 songs in 4 albums. Now there are 83 files in the four folders in question and they are all correctly set up (as the amarokcollectionscanner confirmed when scanning folder!)

restartd amarok, added ONe album - works. Add the second album and immediatly 16 songs from the first album dissappear. They have the same titles but are cover song by different artists playing with David Bowie. Definitely different files (and differently tagged also! I even retagged one album to a differnt release version - no help ...).

Now the thing is I could live with one or two but I have a little short of 28 000 songs (very well tagged and named) and only about 25 000 show up in a full scan.
And as stated before - many albums miss a song in amarok here and there though the files are present and get correctly identified when using clementine or guayadequee. I like amarok and would really like to use it but I just can't get it to work.

Any more suggestions?

thx for reading,

I'll give it a last shot: I will run amarok_afttagger over the whole collection. Maybe this does the trick. I'll let you know ...
Though this would mean that for any new files I want to add I have to run th afttagger again, right? seems like a lot of hussle, not like a nice and easy collection management.

I don't think the afttagger has anything to do with that. don't mix the collectionscanner with the aftagger, those are completely different things.

I asked the developers to look into this, no idea why this doesn't work for you, I have none of these problems.

well somehow afttagger solved my problem. It ran about 6 hours writing some kind of unique IDs into the files and now they are all there.
Still the reappearing files need some care because adjustiions I made to albums in amarok don't show in the freshly appeared files. So I have to manually correct many things I did before again. Like setting the "no compilation" flag again, correct spelling of some artists and so forth.

The thing with the afttagger is that I should have to run it for every addition I amde to the library ... :-\

thx for your patience,
piedo
