How to Upgrade Amarok to 2.7

Mon Mar 04, 2013 1:44 am
I upgraded my PC to an i7 with 16 Gig memory so I also upgraded to the 64-bit image of Kubuntu 12.10

I tried to use Amarok, but...

-Amarok crashed
-I decided to send a bug report (I had never done this before)
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=316055

-A support person told me to upgrade Amarok to 2.7
-I found a procedure on the KDE site
>
> sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports
> sudo apt-get update
> sudo apt-get upgrade
>

-I did it, but KDE broke and I could no longer log in.
KDE gave me a white background but no login screen

-using my ipad, I found a way to back-out of the change:

sudo apt-get install ppa-purge
sudo ppa-purge ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports

-Amarok is still broken, but I can work in Kubuntu again.

Can I use "sudo apt-get install amarok" to only upgrade Amarok to 2.7 ? What do I need to do to change the repository for the change only, and then remove the repository after the change is made?

A second question is, if this is the fix for the bug, why doesn't Muon Update manager do it. Muon said the system was up to date.

Thanks for helping a newbee!

Well, you did it partially right, but you need both PPA's for Kubuntu, the regular Kubuntu PPA and the Backports PPA. And you do not need to update everything, just

Code: Select all
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa
sudo apt-get update
should then trigger Muon to show you the upgradable packages. There you can just select Amarok, no need to upgrade everything.

No idea why you got a blank screen, but that can just be that you have configuration files that cause a problem, in that case, from a shell, do the following (without starting KDE, just Ctrl+Alt+F1 to go to a shell):
Code: Select all
 mv ~/.kde ~/.kde-old

Then go back to the login shell with Ctrl+Alt+F7

Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ...

Re: How to Upgrade Amarok to 2.7

I spent the day studying how apt works and what the commands were supposed to do. Once I spelled them right
they did install amarok 2.7. <smile>

Unfortunately the application crashes every time I try to play a music file on my local system. :-(
the debug dump looked to me like others already received, so I did not send it in to the developers.

I guess the application simply won't work on my version of Kubuntu 12.10 64-bit .

Now if I understand this, Muon is a from-end to apt, so if I changed the source repositories to try amarok 2.7
I need now to change them back to more supported repositories ?? --but how ?

here's what I did to install amarok 2.7:

Wrong guess: I use Kubuntu 12.10 myself on a 64-bit system, it certainly works. Don't jump to conclusions here, please, it's totally illogical.

Try erasing the configuration files with this command:
Code: Select all
 rm $HOME/.kde/share/config/amarok*

Then start Amarok from a konsole with this command:
Code: Select all
 amarok -d --nofork

At least you will get some debug output telling us why it doesn't work. Also if it crashes, don't paste the output here, use http://paste.kde.org and give the link, it's far easier to actually read it in a paste than having to scroll in a reduced forum space. If you get a crash I will need the backtrace from Dr. Konqi, NOT the konsole output.

Thanks for helping me with this issue. I appreciate it so I can learn how kde works. I love it.

Here is the last part of the console dump after the app crashed. I had just tried to play something in my playlist...

Well, without a backtrace it is hard to tell. I presume you did erase the old config files before that, didn't you? If not, that is the first thing to do and try again.

Now, make sure you have the package "amarok-dbg" installed, then run Amarok with the following options:
Code: Select all
gdb amarok
run -d --nofork

When it crashes, you type
Code: Select all
 thread apply all bt

and provide the backtrace that follows from there.

Re: How to Upgrade Amarok to 2.7

Tue Mar 05, 2013 11:42 pm
You did it right, no worry :)

There is nothing indicating a problem with Amarok, I suspect it to be a phonon or gstreamer or pulseaudio issue. Could you please install the package "phonon-backend-vlc", then in the KDE Systemsettings -> Multimedia -> Phonon -> Backend tab push the vlc engine to the top, then restart KDE.

I first tried to install it with Muon Package Manager, but it was not listed there ??

then I tried with apt-get install... see below

chad@chad-System-Product-Name:~$ apt-get install phonon-backend-vlc
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13: Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?
chad@chad-System-Product-Name:~$ sudo apt-get install phonon-backend-vlc

Sorry, try again.

Weird, are you sure you have all sources configured correctly? Please check in the Muon Package Manager Settings menu -> Configure Software Sources that you have all sources checked, and that all updates in the Updates tab are checked as well. In doubt, you should use the Main Server as a source, your mirror might be faulty.

If you didn't have all sources configured, then please update your system first, because that might be the main problem we face here.

Re: How to Upgrade Amarok to 2.7  Topic is solved

Sun Mar 10, 2013 12:54 am
Thanks so much for helping a newbee. Unfortunately I can no longer work on this bug, as I got to
a point where I could no longer boot into the image, and would get a "grub rescue > -" message.
I thought this meant that I needed to fix grub, so I spent a day or so trying, only to realise that grub
was not really broken, but there was a setting/procedure with my Asus UEFI (bios) boot mamager that
can giving me the grub rescue message instead of booting. I do not have a good explanation for it yet, but
will discuss it in a better form.

In the process, I reloaded many different images (or tried) and ended up Kubuntu 12.04 LTS amd-64
which is currently working on my hardware. --including Amarok!

I'll leave well enough alone for now.

regards
