Wed Dec 04, 2013 1:52 am
I am using Amarok 2.8 and it seems memory usage is out of control.

openSUSE 13.1

3.11.6-4-desktop

Backend gstreamer.

currently Amaork is using 246MB of Ram.

What is the usage if you disable the Analyzer applet?

Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ...

What is the analyzer Applet?

I am not running the Context View.

Let run all day today and got home Amarok was using over 600MB

I have online radio running all day.

I just restarted and Amarok is using 162MB Accroding to htop and a 166MB according to top.

The longer I leave it running the more memory it consumes.

What can I provide to help solve this issue?

I really like Amarok and want to know I can use it and it will not cause my system to become unstable.

Since you are not using the Context View, try switching the backend to phonon-backend-vlc, as you don't need gstreamer. That should reduce the memory consumption .

Oh, and markey just told me this:

markey wrote:"013-12-02T20:52:06.450769-05:00 pegasus kernel: [207532.383101] pulseaudio invoked oom-killer: gfp_mask=0xd0, order=0, oom_score_adj=0"

This could be related to Pulseaudio

Mamarok,

Have installed the phonon-vlc-backend.

Started Amarok
using Htop - Amarok started out using 137M Ram
After 5 minutes up to 151M Ram

Agree there may have been, or be an issue with pulse-audio. However I think that killer was started after the system ran out of memory.
I have 4GB in the system. Not a lot, but enough that of the only things running are Thunderbird email, Firefox, a couple of term windows and Amarok, system should not run out of memory.

Pulse-Audio resident in memory using 7.7M.

I will continue to monitor the system.

Hoping phonon-vlc-backend can stabilize Amarok at 151M or there abouts.

Will report back.

Came home this evening and Amarok is stable at 138M. Has not changed since I left for work this morning.

The high of 151M was probably because I had the interface open on the desktop. After minimizing it to the system tray, memory went to 137M.

I left for work and it was at 138M.

Has held stable all day.

It seems installing the photon-vlc-backend package did the trick.

We can mark this case sol ved. ;D

I also updated my kernel last night to 3.12 and rebooted.

Amarok has been stable at 136M all day long.

The fix was to install the phonon backend. Who'd a thunk it. Other than the experts here of course.

Thanks to all who helped.

And a special Thanks to Mamarok.

You are welcome :) Sadly there is a known problem with gstreamer when it comes to memory consumption which is pretty much out of our hands, so indeed, if you don't need the extra features requiring the gstreamer backend, using the vlc backend is the best solution.
