I'm Back.....
Fresh install of openSUSE 13.1. Amarok works great with gstreamer as backend. zypper in phonon-backend-vlc Select VLC as backend No Sound Select gstreamer as backend. Sound - Yay - Not yay. memory issues Need VLC backend to work. I have read a few things to check out. However, I think it wise to ask the experts before I just start installing stuff willy nilly in an attempt to fix the issue. What do I need to provide or look at on my system? |

which repo provides the VLC packages ? you might need the ones from Packman

I could not install phonon-backend-vlc until after I enabled the packman repos. I will check out when I get home where the backend came from. So far only trying to play a radio stream. On my original openSUSE 13.1 system the same radio stream worked fine with the vlc backend. On my original setup I had installed the codecs and dependecies that would allow me to play itunes music files in Amamrok prior to installing vlc backend. I have written down at home what I installed. When I installed vlc it just worked. Could some depedency have been loaded, original install, that I loaded so itunes files would play, that has not been loaded on the new system yet? |

Packman doen't have a phonon-backend-vlc for 13.1, did for 12.3, make sure it's the one from a KDE repo (not OSS)
Both Packman and openSUSE have VLC packages but the Packman should allow more music types With the VLC backend can you play mp3 and wma files? What is the music stream url? |

The one from the OSS repo works fine.
Especially you need the package "vlc-codecs". Check that this is installed. |

I was wondering about that. On the old system I loaded a bunch of codecs for before I installed the phonon-backend-vlc. I wish I could have provided more info this morning but was unable to as I have to work But, I will check out what you guys are pointing out and provide more data later tonight. |

I got home and looked through my notes for codecs I might have installed on my old system prior to installing the phonon-backend-vlc. Sure enough - There is vlc-codecs listed as the very first one I had installed. Is my face red or what! Amarok is playing everything great. Memory is where I expect it to be. Thanks Wolfi323! And thank you everyone. |
