How to tag music in ac3 format?

Sun Feb 23, 2014 6:31 pm
I have two folders with music in 5.1 format (ac3), I try to tag the files but does not work, does not recognize the duration of the music, not the amount of stored reproductions and score I assign them.

Any way to pass information about these songs to amaroK?

Greetings

re tags: I'm gonna guess it's a failing of taglib and not Amarok, I created an ac3 file and then tried editing the tags with Puddletag, Easytag, Picard and Kid3 and the file did not show in any of the programs

update: Google'ing makes be think that ac3 doesn't actually have tags, the only app that supposedly could write them was Foobar and a post questioned whether they just did a dirt hack and appended it to the end of the file

ac3 is not a format that supports tags, it only supports additional labels in a non-standard container, I guess that is what Foobar did. The best you can do is to convert your music to a format that supports id3 tags, something most other formats do without big problems. If you want a loss-less format, you should consider using FLAC, for a compressed format with good quality OGG is the way to go. Of course, f you insist on using proprietary formats, you can use WAV for loss-less or MP3 for compressed, although the latter is probably the worst choice, quality wise.

FWIW: I have the tracks you mention in the Spanish forum post in FLAC and that works like a charm :)

Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ...

Thank you all for your responses.

Too bad the sound files such as AC3 or DTS not support labels, should not be too complicated to add an XML tag at the end of the file.

Cuando extraje la música en formato AC3, creo que fué porque ocupaba bastante más en formato FLAC.

Testing with six channels, the result for the full DVD is
  • AC3 - 236.8 MiB. - 448 kbps, 48 kHz and 16 bit
  • DTS - 797.7 MiB. - 1536 kbps 48 KHz and 16 bits
  • FLAC 16-bit - 1.1 GiB. - Var. kbps, 48 KHz and 16 bits
  • FLAC 24-bit - Not tested.
As you can see the difference is quite large. The FLAC kbps are closer to the values DTS to AC3 values, suppose that an expert might notice difference in sound, I noticed no difference.

There shouldn't be a difference in sound quality as FLAC doesn't compress the file, it is a loss-less format, as said above.

FWIW: the current Amarok version is 2.8.0, released in AUgust 2013, the 2.7.1 version is rather outdated.

I know, but are not yet available in the Mageia 3 repositories. Maybe so in Mageia 4 which just came out.

Greetins.
