Export database to another computer

Fri Aug 08, 2014 4:21 pm
Hello everyone, following situation:

I have two computers. Both have the same audio files, within the same folders. Computer 1 contains an amarok database without thousands of ratings. Now I want these ratings on Computer 2, how do I do this? Is it possible to copy the .kde/share/apps/amarok folder to the 2nd computer? Will this work? Is there another solution? The goal is an one time export of the database/the ratings not a constant synchronisation.

Thanks in advance! :)

Just copying over will not work, as the database will have another location.
To share a database between computers you should use the external database in the settings, then you can access it from different computers.

Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ...

Hm, okay. So on the one computer I enable external mysql database, then amarok copies all relevant information there and then i can move this database somehow to another computer?

you don't move it to the other computer, you access the database from the other computer. In effect you use one database for both computers.

If you decide to move tracks, then you should store the ratings and statistics on the tracks, which is an option in the settings as well.

That's not what I want. Computer 1 is my old notebook, computer 2 my new one. All I want is to transfer the metadata ones and then the old notebook/amarok database is not used anymore.

Sorry, then I misunderstood what you wanted, I presumed you were using both computers.
Indeed, in that particular case you can just copy over all the data located in ~/.kde/share/apps/amarok as well as the amarok* files in ~/.kde/share/config/, presuming your music files are in exactly the same location they were on the previous computer.

Same situation here, but in my case I can't store my music on the new computer to the same location.
Either I point the local collection to the new folder - but then all my ratings (>5000) are lost.
Or I copy the old database files into ~.kde4/... - but then I just can't make them point to the new music files.
Is there any way to use the old statistics in a new location?
Thanks for help, Matti.

I think I have found a workaround - don't know yet if it's stable.
Create a new empty folder on the new machine at the same location where the music was on the old computer.
Open Amarok and select this directory for the local collection. Amarok will say '0 songs'.
In the settings, deselect in 'Local Collection' the boxes 'scan folders recursevly' and 'observe changes'. Close Amarok.
Copy your old ~.kde4/share/apps/amarok/mysqle/amarok/* files to the same place on the new machine.
Open Amarok - it will show all your music with the ratings - but, of course, there is no connection yet to the physical files.
Go to settings and choose the new music folder for the local collection.
Now all the songs should be rated again, and playable.
Then you can select the boxes 'scan folders recursevly' and 'observe changes' again. But, of course, beware of scanning the local collection again!

Hope this helps and really works.
Matti
