Hi,

Amarok was working fine in Fedora 20 but will not play mp3 files since I upgraded to Fedora 21 (using the fedup application).

I followed all the adivce I could find on the internet about codecs (having gone down this road successfully on previous upgrades), but have still drawn a blank this time.

In the "Amarok/Manual/Various/TroubleshootingAndCommonProblems" page it suggests proving the Phonon/Gstreamer setup by using Dragon. This plays my mp3 files perfectly, so I have to assume that all the relevant codecs are available. I cannot see any error output in Amarok itself or in /var/log/messages when I try to play a file. The progress bar shows "0:00" at the left hand end, nothing at the right hand end and there is no progress button in the slider.

Is there anything I can do to gather information about what is going wrong?

My Amarok is 2.8.0 of Oct 19 2014 running under KDE 4.14.3 on Fedora 21 x64_86, all fully updated.

Thanks

Mick

for debugging close Amarok and then restart it with
Code: Select all
amarok --debug --nofork

please post the information displayed in Help -> Diagnostics

fyi - error messages in KDE when generated are usually in the file ~/.xsession-errors not /var/log/messages

Well, go figure. You must have said the magic words because now it works!

As suggested, I started Amarok in debug mode and it was ok. I then stopped Amarok and ran it as normal, which still worked. I thought it may have been because Dragon was still open, so I closed all my apps and logged off KDE. I then (as root on a text mode log in) cleaned up the xsession error file so I'd get a fresh print and rebooted the system.

I logged on into KDE and Amarok is now working fine.

Maybe something got unmessed up by running Dragon? Maybe running Amarok in debug mode did something?

Whatever, it is now behaving as it used to do and is playing mp3s to me as I write this.

Thanks for the help anyway. Maybe it was just a false alarm and a brain-fritz on mypart.

I have the same problem, after updating Fedora 20 to 21 I can't play mp3.
And just running Amarok in debug mode did not solve it for me.

I see following error though:
Code: Select all
** Message: PackageKit: xid = 23068691
** Message: PackageKit: desktop_id = (null)
** Message: PackageKit: Codec nice name: MPEG-1 Layer 3 (MP3) decoder
** Message: PackageKit: ignoring field named parsed
** Message: PackageKit: field is: mpegversion, type: gint
** Message: PackageKit: field is: layer, type: gint
** Message: PackageKit: structure: gstreamer1(decoder-audio/mpeg)(mpegversion=1)(layer=3)()(64bit)
** Message: PackageKit: Did not install codec: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownInterface: No such interface 'org.freedesktop.PackageKit.Modify2' at object path '/org/freedesktop/PackageKit'

I tried to reinstall gstreamer-plugins-[good,bad,ugly] trio, but that did not help. VLC plays the mp3 fine. Dragon and Amarok has this problem.

Edit: I solved the problem following this post http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showpost. ... ostcount=4
TL;DR install other phonon backend (vlc one)
