I hope the esteemed experts here can help me with an issue. As an attempt to stay ahead of entropy <wink>, I'm moving my music collection to a new 1TB RAID 1 array (brand new drives) in the same server. My collection is on a 1 TB RAID 1 array mounted at
/media/<username>/data (/dev/sdb). I'm copying it to /media/<username>/<hexadecimal_number> (/dev/sdd). (/dev/sda is the OS drive - Lubuntu - and /dev/sdc is a 500 GB RAID 1 array that will be replaced with a 1TB RAID1 array in the future.) I want to know what is the easiest way of updating or moving the Amarok database records of my collection to the new location? (When I find out the best way I'll delete my collection from the old location.) Should I change the mount point of the new drive (array) to the old drive's mount point (/media/<username>/data) and change the old drive's mount point to /media/<username>/<different_name>? Should I just rescan the entire collection? Should I do something else? (Just to be clear: the Amarok database isn't being moved - the collection it refers to is being moved.) My collection is 35K - 40K songs in FLAC, .mp3, and .wav formats in that order of size. There are a few (less than 200) song videos in .mp4, .wmv, .flv, .mov, .swf, .mpg, .ogg, .asf, and .avi formats. (That list isn't in order of size.) I am in the process of adding metadata about each file (composer/writer, album, year, some other notes) and have already done so for somewhere between 10% and 25% of my collection, including the videos. (Obviously I don't want to lose the metadata I've already added.) Thank you for helping me with this. I'll add to this post if you need more information to be able to help me. |

I always follow the same algorithm:
1) /usr/bin/rsync -va /source_path/ /target_path/ 2) test the copied data set 3) check that everything runs fine 4) use new data set for a week 5) delete old data set

Sorry - I don't fully understand but it sounds like you've given me a command to copy the data to the new drive. I'm looking for help with updating the Amarok database to refer to the data's new location, not with copying it over.

Ah, sorry
If in doubt you could always let Amarok build a new one for the new location... I also like your suggestion of changing the mount point of the new location to that of the old one. Should work out of the box.

So either way will work? Is one way better than another?

Changing the mount point would be quicker...
But remember not to wipe the old data set just in case

Not to worry - i have several backups of the data set.
Thanks for your help. |
