Play music from NAS/Server

Sat Aug 03, 2019 10:32 am
I have my music collection on a NAS drive attached to my home router. I wish to browse and play songs with Amarok. But it only looks at my local files on my PC. Dolphin can see the share and the music folders OK.
The Music on the NAS is also set up for upnp if that is required. VLC can see them OK.
I couldn't find any method in the help documentation or on the web. How can I set Amarok up to see my music? Thanks

You need to mount the NAS as a data source from your computer. If the NAS is mounted when starting Amarok, you should be able to see and browse it. You can actually set it up as a collection, but make sure it is always already accessible from the computer before you start Amarok.

Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ...

Thanks. Strange that some applications can access the network and others not.
Is there an easy way to mount the NAS share and keep it mounted? I'm not an IT person so I'd need a GUI type way.

I use Dolphin to mount external stuff, this works quite fine for both external hard disks and network shares.

Thanks. I can navigate to the NAS shares with Dolphin. But it doesn't have any mount command that I can see. What do you actually do in Dolphin?

To be able to stream you need to mount it, what you currently see in Dolphin is not mounted. Use either NFS or SMBS/CIFS, NFS is the one that works best with Amarok.

Dolphin should have a Network entry in the right hand list, the rest should be self-explaining. (if you want to use SMB/CIFS you will have to install samba first, of course).

There is also a set of instructions for Samba shares here : https://userbase.kde.org/Amarok/Manual/ ... ions/Samba

I can navigate via Networks to the shares. But I cant see any way to mount anything. Is there some menu or steps I should be doing?
Thanks for that link to those instructions. But they look way too techy. I'm sure there's got to be an easy way for normal users.

When you open Dolphin, on the left (sorry, my bad) there is a menu with your home folder and all other connected places. If it is not there, hit F9 should make it appear.

Yes. I've got the Network item. And can go from there to find the network shared folders. And see all the music. But Dolphin does not have any mount command.

KDE is weak when it comes to networking. If any new user wants to play music with the KDE's own player Amarok, it's fine until the network is involved.

Try UPnP, then, just make sure you have all needed packages installed, and activate the UPnP option in the Amarok settings. I am just not sure it works.

thanks. That looked like a nice easy solution. Although that link you posted has this to say about upnp.
The UPnP feature depends on KDE's UPnP media server support. As of now (2015) there is no working UPnP kio-slave available.

No upnp device shows up in Amarok under Local music after activating the plugin.
Web searching found kio-upnp-ms is what is needed. Discover doesn't find that or any other clear option to install upnp.

There should be a working UPnP KIO in Plasma 5 now, but there currently is no official port to the new libraries released yet.

If you are running a Distro like SuSE Tumbleweed, Gentoo or Arch there are packages available, although in pre-release state with the Context View missing

I'm on KDE Neon. But I couldn't find any bugs regarding this posted on bugs.kde.org. So I think I need to add one. It shouldn't be this hard for new users to play their music.

I know, it's just even harder to find dedicated developers with enough free time on their hand to fix this...
