audiocd

Sat Oct 02, 2004 2:24 am
I've compiled the latest version of amarok.

To make that work I edited a file called firstrunwizard.ui.h, but I guess either what I did was wrong or you know about it already.

Anyway, I can't get a CD to play. I type in audiocd:/ and the virtual subfolders appear, but they're all empty...including the Wav subfolder.

Kaffeine has no problem playing the CD.

Does anyone know why this has happened? Perhaps I missed something before installing...

In fact by removing the requirement for the file I'm searching for to have a particular extension (somethng like .msu, I can't remember exactly), I could add the Wav track to the playlist.

Now it just won't play - it does briefly, then cuts out.

Amarok seems to be catering mainly for hard drive music collections. Seems to me that downgrading the CD player isn't very friendly.

Jumping to conclusions doesn't help anyone. amaroK supports playing media from all KIO sources. I'll help you if you provide engine and amaroK version information.

Amarok version is the most recent one available from the sourceforge web page. Not sure what you mean exactly about the engine (not experienced in terminology)...I tried playing it through both gstreamer and xine, as selected in the Amarok configuration panel.

What I mean by being more friendly to hard-drive music is this...it's easy to scan for such music, it's easy to see where in the Amarok interface it appears, and it's easy to know which buttons to press to make them appear. Similarly when I use Kaffeine, when I want to play a CD, I click on the menu that says Play, and then the item that says CD. Is it possible for there to be a button on the Amarok interface that simply says "play audio CD"?

I acknowledge I will have made a mistake in compiling Amarok, or in preparing required dependencies. But my point is that having to type in audiocd:/ is less intuitive than accessing other sources of music on the computer. I don't doubt that your program plays CD's perfectly well.

Thanks for the help, and I didn't mean to be provocative. The program is very nice to use.

Firstly, sorry that my messages appear twice...I don't know why.

When I play a CD track from the Ogg subfolder, Amarok keeps stopping to buffer. Not sure if that helps...thought I'd mention it.

If you play from the ogg folder audiocd will be encoding the track to ogg before passing it to amaroK where it will be decoded back to pcm! I suggest using the wav folder.

And I understand your complaints, we almost always have all user complaints on our TODOs waiting to be addressed.

And seriously we don't just cater to hard-disc collections.

Ok, cheers for the reply.

My comment about ease of using CD music come from using Kaffeine. In fact the new version of Kaffeine has an icon that specifically says "Play Audio CD", which it does through the xine engine - I still can't do that in Amarok.

I know I must have done something wrong during compilation - I just don't know what.

But I'd rather use Amarok as it has a better interface, and the fewer applications the better! (For me, anyway).

If this is any use, it may be an error message I get when trying to play a CD:

QObject::connect: Cannot connect QSignal::signal(const QVariant&) to (null)::(null)

I have no idea what it is, so sorry if it's irrelevant.

Cheers

[Also I was wondering about XMMS-type plugins...I'm not a programmer/hacker, so I won't be developing anything. But some plugins in XMMS are really good. (I used crossfade and alarm in particular). Perhaps similar things will appear , Amarok...it seems to develop very quickly.]

Compiled the new version, and also used the kalyxo pre-compiled Amarok.

New interface is really easy to use. I clicked on "Play Audio CD", and it went straight to the Konqueror-type representation of Wav folder, Ogg folder...etc. Entered the Wav folder, had no contents. Same with all the folders.

Manually added a Wav file, the start of playback was glitchy and basically didn't work well.

This may, or may not, help:

amarok: [Gst-Engine] Loading url: audiocd:/Wav/01)%20Me%20Diras%20Que%20Sabroso%20(La%20Coleccion%20Cubana)%20-%20Compay%20Segundo.wav
amarok: [InputPipeline::InputPipeline()]
amarok: [void gst_streamsrc_base_init(void*)]
amarok: [void gst_streamsrc_class_init(GstStreamSrcClass*)]
amarok: [void gst_streamsrc_init(GstStreamSrc*)]
amarok: [virtual bool GstEngine::play(unsigned int)]
amarok: [Gst-Engine] Fade-in finished.
amarok: Gst-Engine: SUSPENDING kio transfer.
amarok: Gst-Engine: RESUMING kio transfer.
amarok: [virtual void GstEngine::stop()]
amarok: [void GstEngine::destroyInput(InputPipeline*)]
amarok: [Gst-Engine] Destroying input pipeline.
amarok: BEGIN [InputPipeline::~InputPipeline()]

I'll keep trying the new versions of Amarok. I realise that using software on Linux can be complicated sometimes, so perhaps I'm doing something wrong. But for now it's back to Kaffeine.

Charlie

PS. if it makes any difference, I ran gst-register and it made no improvement.

When you open up an audiocd:/ with Konqueror, is the WAV folder still empty?

You might just bypass all the KIO **** and go ahead and mount the CD like normal, play the files off of it directly.

The Wav folder in Konqueror is not empty. I can play Wav files from Konqueror. But that defeats the object, I think.

Does anyone have a suggestion as to what I'm doing wrong? Has anyone else had the same problem?

Am I missing something during compilation? Could it be a gstreamer problem/kio problem/amarok problem...?

Konqueror sees CD's no problem...Xine plays them no problem (including Norah Jones EMI Copy Control CD).

Am I the only person who can't play CD's in Amarok. If I am, I'll stop asking about it.

Hi all,
I have the same problem with 1.1.1 and gstreamer.
When I use xine engine I see all the files in the audiocd:/ subdirs. It seems that only GStreamer have a problem listing the tracks.

Using xine engine doesn't help, since when I play the files amarok crashes with:
kio (KMimeType): WARNING: KServiceType::offers : servicetype video/x-ms-wvx not found

For each MIME type. So I guess it's kio bug and not amarok's.

arts engine seems to be the only one working with kioslave.

I am having the same trouble playing audiocds - I have no idea how to have them playback. I wonder if it has to do with not having the gstreamer-cdplayer-0.8.4 plugin - I can't find a version of it for my distro (Mandrake 10.0).
I am running amaroK from the cooker rpm and it crashes all the time and behaves unexpectedly. I will try and compile it from source but am relatively new to linux.

Re:audiocd

I am sorry to all the cd-playing amaroK users. Here's a complete CD low-down:

None of the amaroK developers play CDs. We rip all our CDs to encoded forms, I try playing a CD very ocassionally, and usually not with my computer! It's just harder on a computer. MP3s are different, they make music easy and fun in my opinion, CDs are in general just more tedious. Anyway I'm going off topic here.

Two engines will play CDs in amaroK, GStreamer and aRts, and they only do this via the audiocd:// KIO slave.

Actually I've just had a thought, xine engine will play CDs, just pass it this URL:

cdda:/1

or it might be

cdda://1

It should start playing the first track, and hopefully play the rest. This is a bit of a hack really.

Basically there is no support for custom engine stuff. Everything has to be done the same way so that we can support multiple backends easily. Hopefully things will improve in the future, but as I say amaroK is mainly designed for playing files. Hope that stuff helps.
