I?m guessing but I suspect there other people out there how have Mandrake 10 and want to install amaraoK. (everybody does, it rocks!)
I got a mislead by the PKG_CONFIG_PATH thing at first, this is what I did to get it working, hope it helps someone 1) Check your soundcard is actually working with ALSA. If it isn?t fix it before going any further. (this seems to a big thing with Mandrake 10 for some reason) 2) Find a cooker mirror, install it with : (all commands have to run as root) urpmi.addmedia cooker [your cooker URL] urpmi.update -a 3) Remove all files which mention gstreamer, then rpm ---rebuild-db (go make a cup of coffee, read a newspaper...) urpmi gstreamer urpmi gstreamer-plugins urpmi gstreamer-alsa urpmi gstreamer-flac urpmi gstreamer-mad urpmi gstreamer-audio-formats urpmi gstreamer-devel 4) download taglib 1.3 from taglib.org rm ?rf /usr/include/taglib bunzip2 taglib-1.3.tar.bz2 tar xf taglib-1.3.tar cd taglib-1.3 ./configure ?prefix=/usr; make ;make install then finally cd amarok-1.1 ./configure ?prefix=/usr; make ;make install and enjoy! Its worth the hassle |

Gstreamer vs aRts.
I do know that under the hood, gstreamer is much better and so on than aRTs. But avove the hood (behind the steering weel, so to say) it plainly sucks on KDE. My mail-notifies, kopete-attention bells, error sounds etc, acumulate, untill gstreamer is finished. (aRts plays sounds nicely in real time). gstreamer only works when arts is swtiched off. gstreamer does ni=ot work well with KIO etcet. So I decided to leave gstreamer gstreamer and use aRts for my amarok. I compiled amarok without any gstreamer libraries, and it works like a charm here.. So a lot of steps in the abovementioned posts can be skipped, if you wish. But you will then have an aRts only amarok. |

One of the devs mentioned that you could use the arts output plugin for gstreamer. Then gstreamer would only be decoding the audio and arts would handle the sound card.
I haven't actually done this, since amaroK is pretty much the only audio program I use anyways, so I just stick to gstreamer. |

if you got a proper alsa setup (with dmix e.g.), you can run arts and gstreamer concurrently. also, you can still use kio with gstreamer in amarok! regards, muesli |

Amarok compiled and installed fine for me just using the instructions provided in the readme...
I'm a linux noob though, and now that I've compiled and installed it, I have no clue how to run it! Any help here? |

type 'amarok' on your console. or you probably want a shortcut on your desktop so right click and then new->link to application. just put amarok in the 'command' box under the application tab. make sure to set the icon from the amarok directory aswell!
p.s. well done on compiling been a noob |
