since 1.2. amarok uses almost 100% of the cpu capacity and my system almost crashes when starting amarok!

I\'ve been getting this a lot as well, I haven\'t found out what is causing it. I just quit amarok and start it again, but after an hour or two I\'ll see I\'ve been churning along at 100% for a while.

Make sure you don\'t have the ffmpeg gstreamer plugin installed and update to the CVS amaroK. I think there was a memory leak or something.

install the libmad and mad plugin for gstreamer, it has a higher priority then ffmpeg does

simple as that.

I dunno, uninstalling software is distro-specific.

scrobbler???

anyway, i notice that after keeping amaroK open for about an hour or so makes my system very unstable. After work I will try lowering the priority of ffmpeg and see if that does anything. Just curious though, why does ffmpeg do this? is it a bug in ffmpeg?

ffmpeg is broken for gstreamer. Install gst-plugins-mad (or whatever it is called on your distro). Or just use xine.

gst-plugin-mad... i am using slackware, but from what you say it sounds like it is called something dif. for each distro. I did a search for gst-plugin-mad and it looks like that one is for gentoo.. What do i need to get for slackware?

Easiest method would be to get the source (gst-plugins 0.8.6 -> http://gstreamer.freedesktop.org/src/gst-plugins/ ) and compile the mad plugin yourself.
This requires the mad library and libid3tag (as far as I know).

Maybe you encounter problems about a too old gstreamer version, newest one is 0.8.8: http://gstreamer.freedesktop.org/src/gstreamer/
