gstreamer can't play anymore

Tue Dec 21, 2004 10:27 am
i recently rebuilt kdemultimedia to include mp3 support since redhat/fedora disables it by default.before this amarok plays fine w/ the gstreamer engine using alsasink.now it doesn\'t anymore.amarok doesn\'t crash.it just won\'t play.just to make sure, i recompiled amarok, but i still am not able to play anything. i doubt that it\'s the new kdemultimedia that\'s causing it.i just enabled a feature, everything is the same.. .

anyone has a clue on how to fix this?

Do you have the gstreamer-mad plugin? Why not use xine?

Yes, kdemultimedia doesn\'t have anything to do with amaroK.

i have the gstmad.so* file if that\'s what you\'re asking, which is packaged under gstreamer-plugins-extra-audio*. i also have -ffmpeg. it wasn\'t that i lacked .so files to play MP3s. my gstreamer and it\'s appropriate plugins needed by amarok is A-OK.

the fault lies in the new kdemultimedia-3.3.1 which i recompiled to enable mp3 support, no thanks to the fc2/redhat policy against mp3s. after that, amarok just went amock! i uninstalled the former and amarok was playing like happy, happy!

is this a bug? i need the mp3 support for kde coz i have to manually sort out my MP3s every now and then for the new ones i get, and then i don\'t wanna open up amarok or xmms just to do this. managing thousands of mp3s is even crazier under xmms. i want it to play straight from konqueror thru the embedded media player w/c IMHO is faster for my sorting.. .

Your blowing my mind. I don\'t know why kdemultimedia would do that.

You might try uninstalling the gst-plugin-ffmpeg (or whatever your distro calls it). It causes problems with some versions of gstreamer.

yep i\'m wondering too why it\'s doing this. must be something i did during the multimedia rebuild. i think arts is blocking my sound device. more like managing it exclusively, and amarok might be asking to use it directly which i think the arts daemon doesn\'t allow but correct me if i\'m mistaken. i am 100% sure that before the rebuild i have the artsd daemon turned on on KDE startup and amarok was playing fine. what i did was to turn off artsd and amarok plays already. do i need that alsa dmixing thing? or i have another sound card. i think i\'ll just plug that in.. .

yes you will need either

a) dmix

or

b) better soundcard like a sb live

I have this same issue. Amarok actually played through 12 songs out of 13 on my playlist and then crashed. Ever since that the application open fine but as soon as i press play i hear a little click through the speakers and the application terminates.

SuSE 9.2 64 w/ KDE
AMD64 3000+
Gigabyte GA-K8NS
nVidia nForce3 chipset w/ onboard 7.1 audio

Every other audio player plays finewith my current configuration. I am using the gstreamer plugin to an OSSSYNC. No other setting (xine, or alsasync) gave me any output. When the application crashed i was only listening to music.

output of dmesg:

cdrom: open failed.
cdrom: open failed.
subfs: unsuccessful attempt to mount media (256)
end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0
end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0
end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0
subfs: unsuccessful attempt to mount media (256)
amarokapp[12680]: segfault at 0000002e9cb6b00c rip 0000002a9bfcbc17 rsp 0000007fbfffe5e0 error 4

is there a problem with the cdrom. I do not see any settings relating to this in the configuration page.

I hope i didn\'t forget anything

Segfault, impressive. Are you trying to play a cd?

No I am not trying to play a cd. I can close every other application and i get this message the moment i press play on AmaroK

Other than this app i am able to run everything else fine, zinf, alsaplayer, xover office.

any other info that would be helpful let me know how to provide it (relative newbie)?

i just tried playing a cd ksCD and it mounted, and played the disc. It did not have sound but maybe it is expecting that cable off the cdrom and i didn\'t connect one.

anyways i never play cd\'s so i don\'t want to worry about that now. I would love to get amaroK working as it has by far the best music organization tool of any of the linux players.

thanks for your help in advance

Do you have crossfading on? (I had the same problem and could not make GStreamer work.) If it so, you can either switch cossfading off or use ALSA + dmix to handle crossfading.

I\'ve got the same problem as well. Last night I upgraded gstreamer et al to 0.8.8, and got *every* package, etc up to that version. This is a problem I\'ve had intermittently with AmaroK the whole time. I switch to Gstreamer, and the app just won\'t play music anymore. If I don\'t switch to ArTs before I restart the program, I\'ll get a segill error. I\'m running Mandrake 10.1 on a system config\'d as follows:

Amarok 1.2 Beta 3
Athlon 1800+
1GB RAM
SB Live
ATI video

So I\'m not really sure why it\'s not working. I tried the suggestion of turning off crossfading, but that didn\'t work. Anyone got any ideas? I\'d love to have it working with Gstreamer instead of ArTs, because Gstreamer supports more filetypes. Anyways, I\'ll keep crackin away at it.

-Jake
