Assuming you are trying to install the source:
[*]download the file url=http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/amarok/amarok-1.2-beta2.tar.bz2?download]>> here <<[/url] [*]extract the file: [code:1]tar -jxvf amarok-1.2-beta2.tar.bz2[/code:1] [*]configure the application [code:1]./configure --prefix=`kde-config --prefix`[/code:1] [*]compile the application [code:1]make[/code:1] [*]install the application (requires root/superuser password) [code:1]su -c \"make install\"[/code:1] These instructions assume that you have at least one sound system working properly. Have a great day! |

Please read the README (that\'s why that\'s called so, right) and INSTALL before asking. Also, the installation is described here.

And the easiest way is to get a binary package for your distribution if available.

I have the original version that came with my Mandrake 10.1 distro. I love this program, but am interested in upgrading to the latest version. So my questions ...
1) Do I have to remove the original version (a help About would help me know what version it is ) before installing the binary rpms? I say RPMs because it looks like I also need to upgrade somekind of lib file. 2) I *think* I might want to use the version that support mysql. Do I have to first build a database/table within mysql to support this version? Thanks for a great program. Cheers, R. |

OK, read the faq and found the command line options for displaying version. It reports:
Qt: 3.3.3 KDE: 3.2.3 amaroK: 1.1 But my questions above still need answering. Thanks again, Cheers, R. |

Well to answer your questions, R, I would highly recommend uninstalling the RPM you have installed. In actuality, this usually isn\'t necessary when compiling from source, because when you MAKE INSTALL the binaries replace that of the RPMs. But it better to be on the safe side. Older rpms of a certain program might use different binaries in different place. These might interfere with the installation from the source. If you are installing from an RPM usually the package manager will delete the original RPM for you before installing the updated one. But to be safe delete the original first. If the package manager gives you a bunch of conflict errors, don\'t panic. This means it\'s a good package manager and will handle the file replacements for you.
As for the second question, you can setup a mysql database from inside amarok, so no you don\'t have to have a pre-setup. Just a few tips about upgrading to 1.2beta4. Don\'t use rpms. Never have I seen a good RPM for amarok from any distro. You will want xine engine support to be sure it can play any music file (including Microsoft formats). Xine to be sure of its functionality should be compiled form source with wine32 DLLs in the /usr/lib/win32 directory and libdvdcss preinstalled. Then compile xine and install. Make sure you have the latest xine-lib source (1.0). Then compile the latest libvisual (2.0 cvs) and install. If you want musicbrainz support, which is a nice feature, download the latest from the musicbrainz site (libmusicbrainz and libtunepimp) and compile and install. Compile and install libmusicbrainz before libtunepimp. Now you\'re ready to compile beta4 amarok. Hope this helps. |
