Hi,
I just wonder about CPU usage of amaroK and which direction development will have in the (near) future. I just realized, after leaving amaroK for about an hour in the background without playing any track, that the fan of my notebook was on. I looked up CPU usage with top and found amaroK (still inactive) with about 4% of CPU usage (1GHz CPU). In my opinion this is far too much for an inactive app (that\'s even more than XMMS will take in playing mode - actually about 0.4%). Are there any plans to improve this behaviour? Marcel P.S.: Still amaroK 1.2beta2 with gstreamer plugin |

I agree. 1.2-beta3 constantly uses about 4% CPU on a 1.2GHz PIII, it shouldn\'t use anything near this when inactive/minimised (VU/GFX turned off). Hopefully just a bug that will be fixed. I\'m using gstreamer backend, too.

I\'ll look into this, minimised it should use 0%, there\'s no reason otherwise.

That\'s what I think. I tested it again with 1.2beta3.
Just after start minimized it\'s 0%, then I played one song and minimized the windows again. After that track finished, amarokapp takes between 2% and 3% on my machine constantly (inactive again). Mem-usage stays as high as while playing BTW. |

playing a lot of songs today, i stopped playing and minimized amarok. the CPU usage is 0.
this is with todays CVS version. [code:1] 18618 hds 9 0 39888 38m 27m S 0.0 10.3 0:13.36 amarokapp 18624 hds 8 0 39888 38m 27m S 0.0 10.3 0:00.00 amarokapp [/code:1] |

Fair enough, it already improved from beta2 to beta3 and in fact it is still beta, so there\'s still a lot of time to fix such behaviour. So you told me now it is fixed. Fine. I will wait for the next release (beta4 or rc1 or 1.2 final) and try it again.

I can confirm that the constant idle CPU usage only occurs _after_ files have been played. But it remains until I close amarok. (1.2-beta3). I have not tried the latest CVS. Oh, and btw: choosing an engine different than gstreamer makes it go away (such as the \'no engine\').

So it is a problem with gstreamer. Maybe releasing the audio device would also help to fix this (I still would prefer that behaviour as dmix works really bad for my sound card).

OK, I tried it again with the CVS snapshot of Jan, 20th.
Still 4% in idle mode (after I played some music and the playlist ended). I now filled a bug report about that. Post edited by: marcel, at: 2005/01/21 17:35 |
