I installed amaroK on my Ubuntu Linux distro through the Ubuntu repository. Everything seemed fine and amaroK opens fine. However, when I choose to play a commercial music CD, I get an \"io\" and \"format not recognized\" error. Do I need to do something else to get it working? Thanks for your help.

I\'m guessing thats due to the \"copy protection\" on some CDs.

Any way around it? I only want to play standard music CDs on amaroK and I understood that most people can do that. I was wondering if it had anything to do with file associations.

I think it\'s all CDs. I\'m using Ubuntu 05.04 (Hoary) and XFCE for the desktop. I noticed the error message included something about kaudio so I assume there\'s some kind of hook in the KDE subsystem that is missing.

Thanks, Wulf. That\'s too bad, I was looking forward to trying amaroK after all the positive things I\'ve heard about it. I\'ll look for a player more compatable to Ubuntu.

With the next release of Ubuntu due soon it might not be that long before it\'s worth trying again. Meanwhile, you could check out XMMS - that\'s what I\'ve been using for a long time (as a Winamp user on Windows it was familiar to me when I switched over to being in Linux most of the time) and it does work with CDs.

Thanks, Wulf. I\'ll take a look at XMMS and will try the next version of amaroK when it\'s out.
