xine engine on: doubleclick on a song leads to shuffling through the playlist as if the files could not be found
aRts engine: doubleclick on a song leads to...well, nothing.

same with the original amaroK pack by kubuntu installed per apt-get (ver 1.3.1)

Yup, I see the same thing.

Just updated to latest kubuntu pre-release, and amarok is basically non-functional. Works for a while, then sucks up 90% of the CPU and becomes non-responsive.

Had weirdness getting xine engine to work, then aRts failed completely. Something really strange is going on.

Given that someone else is having this problem with Kubuntu, could someone report this issue to their bug tracker?
