I\'m quite new to linux and I just installed amaroK yesterday. My problem is that when i try to play a mp3 file, amaroK just says it isn\'t playable. I know for a fact it is, but i don\'t know what to do to convince amaroK.
Does anybody know what i can do to solve this problem? I just installed easyUbuntu yesterday, could that have caused the problem? |

You need to find a package called libmad or lame. Search for them in synaptic. If they are there install them.
If they don\'t show up you need to enable the repositories where they hide. From a command line type: sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list Find where it says uncomment the following two lines to enable software from the \'universe\' repository. Delete the hashs (##) in front of deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy universe and the next one. Save the file. Open synaptic again, reload and hopefully they should appear. In amarok have a look what engine you are using (settings --> configure amarok --> engine). If you are using gstreamer you will have to install the mp3 plugin for the engine too. Search in synaptic for gstreamer and mp3 and install the proper file. Good luck. |

Thanks a lot, got that working now! : )
But my troubles aren\'t over yet, cause now Amarok wont play my mp4\'files (*.m4a) Are these files not supported, or what can i do to make them playable? |

Whether you can play mp4 files depends if the engine you use supports it (xine, gstreamer, ...) It\'s possible the packages included with your distribution doesn\'t support it by default for the engine you use, then you\'ll have to find some 3th party packages which do support mp4.
The current stable release of amaroK doesn\'t support mp4 tags yet. But they are implementing this into the development version (1.4) as you can read in the developer blogs EDIT: a quick google search told me that for the gstreamer engine there would be a package gstreamer-faad to support mp4. www.ubuntuforums.org may be a usefull source of information for your questions. Mp4s won\'t work until 1.4 (or the current SVN of it). They will play at the moment with both xine and gstreamer but they won\'t be scanned into your collection. Taglib is unabble to read the tags of mp4s at the moment so that\'s why they don\'t show up. Just select them via the files tab and play them from there.
Have a look at this link if you want to try the new features of 1.4 without **** about with header files and other fun. http://amarok.kde.org/blog/archives/66- ... -klik.html I\'ve tryed the klik thing under ubuntu 5.10 and it works perfectly. |

I\'m a brand new linux user. (Kubuntu) I am trying to listen to some voicemail by email. (mp3)
I am not great with computers and didn\'t quite follow the above instructions. (tried but can\'t find anything!) If there is an idiots guide or simpleton\'s explanation, i would greatly appreciate it. |

I hate to say this, but it really is an kubuntu issue, not an amaroK issue. I think you would probably find more useful information in the kubuntu forums. I hear they are quite friendly and helpful over there.
