No artist names in collection view.

Thu Nov 24, 2005 1:44 am
I use Amarok 1.3.1 under Ubuntu 5.10. I downloaded it from an official Ubuntu repository. I use the xine engine with alsa output. (though it seems hardly related to my problem).
After scanning my collection, the collection view shows a list of albums, but the list of Artists is empty, a bare white rectangle, as if no file had any Artist tag. What\'s queer is that the artist name is correctly shown in the playlist window.

Question:
Could someone provide a simple, working, step by step instruction how to persuade amarok to use a libtag.so.1 DIFFERENT from the one installed in /usr/lib

Background:
After much futile googling i abandoned further attempts at the problem described in my previous post. I tried to download the newest version of amarok with the newest version of taglib.

I compiled and installed both into my home directory. I don\'t like to clutter my system directories with files that aren\'t managed by apt. I had to input the path to taglib-1.4.0 manually into the configure script. Following it\'s advice I set the KDEDIRS variable and voila, the newest amarok works...

It inherited the collection prepared by the previous version. It also inherited the problem: full album list, but empty Artist list (and consequently Artist/Album and Artist/Year/Album). I don\'t know if it would be able to read the tags correctly this time, since the program crashes when I try to reload the collection or alter any tag.

Obviously, the problem arises from the conflict between two installed taglib versions. Ldd says that libtag.so.1 has been found in /usr/lib. Setting LD_LIBRARY_PATH doesn\'t help. LD_PRELOAD neither. I\'d rather not uninstall the older version since other programs depend on it. What\'s interesting is that strace doesn\'t mention libtag.so.1 AT ALL., as if it hadn\'t been loaded on startup ,like other shared libraries.
