Once again: Problems with SuSE 10

Wed Jan 18, 2006 10:33 am
Hi guys

Before I get bashed over the head with the FAQ and the manual, let me describe the problem I\'m having, and what I\'ve tried already. If it turns out that I was just too stupid or lazy to find the solution via search function, I\'ll gladly submit to the bashing :)

Ok, so I have SuSE 10, with KDE running, and amaroK installed through apt (additional sources enabled, like packman, guru, etc.).
I can play mp3 files through mplayer and through xine, so it\'s not jus the missing mp3 support problem in SuSE.
When I try and play an mp3 file in amaroK however, nothing happens.
If I start amarok from the command line, so as to see the error messages, I get the following:

[At Startup]:

Starting amarokapp..
amaroK: [Loader] Don\'t run gdb, valgrind, etc. against this binary! Use amarokap p.
QLayout: Adding KToolBar/mainToolBar (child of QVBox/unnamed) to layout for Play listWindow/PlaylistWindow

unix_connect: can\'t connect to server (unix:/tmp/ksocket-ralph/linux.site-2453-4 3ce18a6)

QObject::connect: Cannot connect QSignal::signal(const QVariant&) to (null)::(null)

Can anyone help me here?

*Bump*

This problem still persists. If someone could give me a push in the right direction, that\'d be great.

Well first off, what version of SuSE? 10 I presume?

Okay what version of amaroK? what version of xine? if that is indeed your engine.

What happens when you use GST?

Quite honestly that little information leaves me at pause, because it has absolutely no useful information.

Ok, more info:

SuSE 10
KDE 3.5.0
amaroK 1.3.8
Xine 0.99.4cvs

On searching for \'amarok\', the following packages are shown as installed by apt and YaST:

amarok 1.3.8-1.guru.suse100
amarok-arts 1.3.8-1.guru.suse100

On searching for \'xine\', the following are installed:

libxine1 1.1.1cvs-0511082.SUPER
xinetd 2.3.13-60
xine-ui 0.99.5cvs-0511082.SUPER

As to what you mean by \'GST\', I have no idea. Please enlighten me :)

Hi,
I have amarok 1.3.8 (guru rpm packages) running in SuSE9.3 x86_64 with xine 1.1.1 (all rpm packages installed from packman).
I have uninstalled the original xine packages from Suse and installed the available ones from Packman. I have no Problem at this moment and amaroK rocks !

Try this way and install the xine Files from Packman.

Regards,
Juan

I am having the same problem. I just did a clean install of SUSE 10, Gnome and the latest version of Amarok installed and I don\'t get any sound when playing MP3 files.

GST means gsteramer, another audio engine that amaroK can use. Try it (don\'t forget to install various gstreamer-plugins to be able to play mp3\'s, oggs and so on).

My installed amaroK (the latest) seems to want to use Helix. I have installed all the GST packages but in the engine configuration for amaroK, only Helix (or none) shows up in the engine choices.

there should be some packages like amarok-xine or amarok-gst in your distro\'s repository.

The only amaroK related files in SUSE 10 distro are

amaroK (which I have upgraded to 1.3.1-8.2
amarok-helix
amarok-helix-backend
amarok-libvisual
amarok-xine *
amarok-xmms *

* was not installed

I get sound in RealPlayer 10 when playing MP3. But no sound in Amarok. I can see the graph that the sound is playing (at least thats what it thinks) but no sound output.

When I installed xine just know and selected it as the audio engine, amarok cycled through all the songs in the playlist without actually playing them.

I\'m stumped.

After doing some Googling, I came up with this page from Novell

http://www.novell.com/products/linuxpac ... eamer.html

This file mentioned....

/suse/i586/amarok-gstreamer-1.3.1-7.i586.rpm

....does not exist in YaST2 when I browse to the group it is supposed to be in :

Productivity/Multimedia/Sound/Players

...and its NOT on the DVD either

Well, I found the gstreamer file from the URL below

http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/4/ ... 6.rpm.html

After downloading it and installing via YaST2, it wouldn\'t install. So I had to add the download path to the YaST2 \'installation source\' folder path. It then installed just fine.

When I go to the engine config section in amaroK, it has gstreamer already there with the osssink plugin checked. I try to add my MP3 files and it claims that it can\'t play them. I try all the plugins and the same thing happened.

Any help here folks?

Well, I finally got it working using gstreamer after much fiddling with the hardware settings in YaST2 and installing the MP3 support (as per the Wiki FAQ)
