ipod video

Tue Apr 11, 2006 11:45 pm
first i just want to say that i realize that amarok is an audio player and its an awesome one at that but i was wondering if the developers planned on fixing some of the ipod video transfer problems in upcoming releases right now amarok is (in my opinion) the best ipod manager for linux and i use it to transfer video\'s sometimes but it has some issues such as video being added to the music section and the \"tv shows\" section constantly being removed therefore making my tv shows un reachable unless i make a play list

im not complaining, really im not i just want the dev\'s to know that me and many others are relying on amarok as our main ipod manager and we would like to see some improvements for the ipod video

thanks for listening

I agree - I would like to see increased iPod Video support.

From a user\'s standpoint, Amarok is indeed the best way to use an iPod with a Linux-running computer. It\'s easy to understand the focus on Amarok as a music/audio manager only, but the era of portable media devices as audio-only is, quite frankly, on it\'s way out. Portable media devices with video will quickly be the norm, not the exception. I don\'t think it\'s necessary to support video inside of Amarok itself. It would, however, be very very good for Amarok to be able to put video files in all the correct places on portable media devices like the iPod.

For the short term, I would just be happy with video podcasts that aren\'t .m4v being stored correctly on the iPod.

There are several obstacles that make it quite hard to improve amarok\'s ipod video support:
- primarily, amarok is and audio player. Hence, sacrificing usability for audio tasks for video support is not an option.
- current libgpod cvs (the library that is used for interfacing with the ipod) has removed the functions for querying the ipod model - thus, amarok doesn\'t know, if it\'s video capable or not
- the code for mp4 meta data handling does not distinguish audio-only from video files
- none of the amarok developers owns an ipod video. Thus, it\'s very hard to improve support for these special features, as we don\'t know how it is supposed to work. If you want improved video support, you probably will have to work on this yourselves. Or you could try to motivate us by sending us an ipod video :)
