I\'ve just recently installed Kubuntu Linux 5.10 and decided that I liked amaroK, so I wanted to use it a lot. The main problem was that it wouldn\'t play MP3s (big problem since it\'s still a big format).
My first instinct was to go over to the main site, where I found my exact problem in the FAQ and instructions on how to fix it. Great. I opened up Adept, and managed that part with no problems. I then opened up Konsole, and used the command listed (for GStreamer, since that\'s the engine I\'m using), which produced the following: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree... Done Package libmad0 is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source E: Package libmad0 has no installation candidate The FAQ said nothing about what to do in case of failure, and amaroK is still saying that it can\'t play MP3s. Now to me, a music player that can\'t play MP3s doesn\'t even qualify as a music player, so I\'d love to get this fixed so I can start seriously using amaroK, but I\'ve no idea where to go from here. So I ask for your help. |

it seems that you\'re missing the main repoistory, but I actually think this repoistory should be active by default.
please check if adept shows a line like this, which is active: [code:1]deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu main restricted [/code:1] then run \'sudo apt-get update\' in konsole (without the \'\') if this doesn\'t help you can download libmad here
Annoyed with bbcode since 1999.

Adept shows a lot of lines actually.
There\'s \"deb http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy main restricted\" and \"deb-src http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy main restricted\" listed under \"Uncomment the following two lines to fetch updated software from the network\". There\'s also \"deb http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy-update main restricted\" and \"deb-src http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy-update main restricted\" under \"Uncomment the following two lines to fetch major bug fix updates produced after final release of the distribution\" (that bit sounds important to me). Further down comes the \'universe\' repository lines which the FAQ told me to enable (which I\'ve already enabled), two futher lines about the \'backports\' repository (exactly the same as the ones before it but with \"breezy-backports\" in them), and two last sets of lines with no description. So which lines am I to enable? The top two sets are most similar to what you listed, but not exactly identical. |

Is anyone going to respond? I never got an answer to my question.

Anything? I\'m currently in Windows waiting for a Windows-only file sharer to finish up, but amaroK still isn\'t working properly on the other side.

Look, I\'m just going to keep bumping this until someone responds or you ban me. I\'d just uncomment lines and hope I get the correct result, but the last time I went screwing around like that with Kubuntu, I had to wipe the partitions and reinstall the whole operating system.

Have you checked the kubuntu forums? This is a distro-specific problem, and you\'d probably get a better response there.

I figured since no other application I\'ve tried seems to care about these missing resources and the FAQ here discusses exactly this problem, that I would ask on this forum. But you\'re right, I probably will get a better response at the Ubuntu forums. |

The most obvious answer would be to try another engine... that\'s why there ARE multiple engines, to allow for various distros that have differet ways of implementing support.
