xine for 5.1 ?

Tue Apr 18, 2006 3:12 am
Hello,
I am completely new to linux. I installed suse 10.0 yesterday. Amarok is the default player and seems to be the most robust player in this distro. I can play music with the helix engine but only in stereo and it is not loud at all. I need to configure amarok to play in 5.1. I believe that this is possible with the xine engine and it is an option in the menu. Amarok wont output any sound with the xine engin active. Do i need to install codecs/plugins? I cant play video either ( I know this is not the forum for that but i think the two problems are interrelated). I have done all of the yast updates. I dont know what else to do. Please help a guy with 1.5 days of linux experience. Thanks in advance. :P

By default SUSE can\'t play the mp3 format. To make it work you have to remove your default xine-lib package and install the \"packman\" version with mp3 support. See http://packman.links2linux.org/?action=124 for the package.

The xine engine has support and configuration for 5.1, don\'t forget to install the amarok-xine package.

Good luck!

Thanks alot. You solved my video problems as well. I especially liked the rpms user friendliness as opposed to ./configure and make install. Linux seems to be really cool I wish i had more time to experiment with it as I am an accountant and work six days a week this time of year. Well thanks again :P

Is there a way to have a stereo mp3 play as a 5 channel file by cloning the front and back ? i have amarok set up with the xine engine and 5.1 output but It wont play out of the center and back channels.
