Xine engine doesnt work with OSS only!

This is in the 1.4-rc3. I havent checked with the other older versions yet.

Using amarok with the xine engine for pure OSS usage doesnt work. It claims Xine couldnt find an audio output device, but I can play things with sound just fine through regular xine.

This is not using the Kernel\'s OSS. This is _REAL_ OSS found at opensound.com. I\'m tired of ALSA and their breakage. Their whole API sucks. OSS has always been superior and I know many game programmers who feel the same way and dont even bother with ALSA. (One even said an ALSA dev admitted that for several cards their frequencys were way off.)

Thanks.

Solved!

Tracked down the amarokrc. For some odd reason it was set to xine=alsa

changed it to xine=oss and all was fine.

Maybe this could be changed? Maybe if the audio drivers cant be found for xine it could try again with xine=auto just in case?

Just food for thought I guess.

Whatever.

OS
Maybe don\'t change settings and blame us?

xine engine is by default using a generic way to check what sound system to use, if alsa is available it uses alsa, if oss is available but not alsa it uses oss

Annoyed with bbcode since 1999.

Hello ! my problem is -that only the helix engine works-and that not fine-in my amarok! and i tried a lot of different rpm.versions!

no alsa, oss or anything else (gstreamer, art, xine ..-plugins). if i choose one of these engines and restart amarok ..and i want to play some files-it´s running the whole list under in seconds and tellin me that he stopped the playing!
but the helix engine just make  rukkels in sound and works not really clear! so iam not a proffession linux user- but a proffession musician-working with adour with linux suse10 open source on an m-audio delta1010lt-soundcard! and i love amarok!!!! so it has to work! on my last suse 9.3 it had worked fine!!! but there were some other reasons i had to changed to suse 10!
and so now i tried a lot of nights to get it working without the **** helix-engine---but no alternative engine (like xine,gstreamer,..) works.--i became no error-messages --just no playing and sound after double-click on some songs in the playlist,...no wave--no mp3,....it´s running just the list down...! SO PLEASE CAN U HELP ME!!!! everything is working right on my suse-system---but no multimediaplayer like this genial AMAROK!
maybe u know a way easy to configure or make it work,....i need sound on my linux!! THANKS FOR ANSWERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FIRST bit of advice is to relax dude.  2nd is to give us some details - what versions of amarok and xine-lib, and a (calm) description of whats happening when you use the xine engine and perhaps we can help.

3rd is to join us on freenode #amarok where you can get interactive help.

ok! here are some facts: i use amarok 1.3.1 on opensuse 10.0 with the helix engine! this .rpms i found on my suse-opensuse-dvd! the xine-engine -i tried too-but it dont works! -------->if i choose  the xine engine and restart amarok ..and i want to play some files-it´s running the whole list under in seconds and tellin me that he stopped the playing (same problem with all others engines)!
with the helix engine the sound is really good but struggeling and with other noise in between! maybe if i can configure the helix engine the struggeling and knacks will miss?!! maybe a latenz-problem with the soundcard?? but i use an 200 € pro-soundcard (m-audio delta 1010lt!) and so it have to be a configuration problem of alsa or the helix?!! but as a newbie i dont know -how to configure these...! (could u help?)
so back to the problem: i installed other rpms and lib-plugins (amarok 1.4, etc) and i tried ALL different engines (gstreamer, art, xine ..-plugins)....but just the helix engine works...(but like i said: no really good)!
-i became no error-messages --just no playing and sound after double-click on some songs in the playlist,,....it´s running just the list down...!
in my multimedia-options i choosed alsa for the sound! how can i get XINE engine to work with amarok or how can i configure the helix.engine??? a real player update???
my experience is, not to change and update to much under suse linux---if it works-it works!
and everything is running good-----just amarok not!!!!
i hope these details r enough for u?!?!!! thanks for answers!!!!!
